Hey! I have this world with me and my friend, and I built an Ethoslab style mob system. (I believe, six or seven layers?) And I built the tower in the middle of the ocean, so it had way less caves to deal with, because, if you watch his videos, he makes it clear that lighting up the caves in a 128-block radius of your system. I went in creative and just sprint-flew through the mineshaft/cave system and lit it all up, but it still hasn't been consistent, even besides the night time spawns. Is there something I'm missing? What's the deal?

xray glitch someone above mentioned, you really wanna make sure you get all the caves
also if you are comparing the mobs you see in videos of the PC version to your Xbox grinder you will be sorely disappointed, Xbox can't handle the same amount of mobs as PC.
I built a smaller grinder on xbox and went AFK for 20 minutes came back to about 15 mobs, same on PC 100 mobs
I have been using he X-ray machine, and I think I just about got all the caves, but that is an interesting concept that I could be standing too far away. although, when I'm grinding, I stand right there at the bottom of the tube. I like the idea of putting signs over the water, in fact, I will do that, but Etho didn't say anything about his, and his works fine. I would assume any other mobs that spawn on the pad would push others off, and they don't worry about it being a long fall, so it wouldn't think that that would make that big a difference.. But I'll try it. But thanks for the help! and also, Koolguyiscool, XD I apologize if I offended you. Although, I'm gonna assume that was a joke.
