If you place dirt blocks 4 high where the "X"'s are then plant an oak sapling where the "O" is and bonemeal it you can get a large oak tree everytime (so far everytime I have tried). Learned that tip from sakredchao.
couldn't find a video with the same technique but it's the same principle. Server is full right now or I would invite you to see. On a flat surface place a stack of dirt four blocks high then another stack four blocks high diagonal and touching the corner of the first stack. Plant the sapling (only works on oaks) on the concave side of the stacks then bonemeal until the large tree pops.
Just verified it again it does work. Done in map that has always been on hard survival.
