Me and a few of my friends were online and some random people joined in, obviously they had to be friends with one of mine, so I was down in a mine shaft then i hear my cousin tell me to kick them because they are putting water in all of our houses. After I kicked them i went back to my house and discovered everything was amiss. They had stolen everything! My question is have you ever grieved anybody, if you have, what compelled you to do it? I just cant wrap my mind around it because it doesn't benefit them in any way. So what is the point in it?
In other threads on this topic, the griefers have usually said that they do it for the "lols" - In other words, they like making public jerks of themselves. I've never griefed anyone nor would I ever consider it. It would be nice if you, I and others like us could play a simple game without having to worry about protecting ourselves, but in this day and age where these sorts of jerks seem to be a dime a dozen, here's a few tips:
1) If your world is important to you - Backup your world to a USB just before you start a session. I find using a few different USBs and rotating my backups through them gives me several backups each taken a session apart. That way, if the most recent backup is no good either, I can just step back one more session to the next most recent backup. If you must resort to a backup, of course, you will lose all game progress made after the point the backup was made.
2) Turn the autosave feature off and take control of when you save. This gives you the option of not saving a griefed world.
3) Keep the "Friends of friends" option turned off and set the game to "Invite only." That way, you should know who is in your world at all times.
4) For people you don't think you can trust, turn the "Trust Players" option off and only give them limited abilities that you control. Also, consider starting new worlds with new friends so that they invest the same amount of energy into initially building up the world as you.
5) Hide your valuables well.
Note: None of these things will completely make you immune from griefing; but it will lessen the odds of it happening.
I have a 24/7 server and we have been griefed. kill the griefer (if possible) before kicking them. That way anything they have stolen on the map can be recovered. But don't stop there. The last big griefing incident several of us caught the individual in the act. So everyday I find someone on these forums with a server etc. and I message them the gamer tag of the griefer and a warning to watch out for them. I have posted his name but of course that gets taken down. I will pm you the name of the griefer and if you'll do the same I'll be on the lookout for them.
If a trusted person on my map vouches for them then i'll let new people in... but if they turn out to be a griefer then not only do they get kicked but the person vouching for them will suffe some penalty as well.
New people that I don't know are told the rules and given priveleges a little at a time. They must begin to build something or I will kick them and I watch them for hours. Sometimes in the area or on the map or have a moderator make a run through the area they are in. If they come to the map and start a project and everything seems fine and then they have to leave without anything substantial being built I kicked them and they can try again later.

thats a great idea, idk why i didnt think of that thanks
but sometimes i wish we could have the advanced anti griefing system like on some MP servers on the pc version

I have griefed one time only, and that was hen I caught someone boosting their travel distance.
I prvented them from moving and removed every duplicated item from the world (mind you this was before Creative).
I'm also part of silenthostile server, so griefing in order to survive is common....
"A long time ago, I was in Burma. My friends and I were working for the local government. They were trying to buy the loyalty of tribal leaders by bribing them with precious stones but their caravans were being raided in a forest north of Rangoon by a bandit. So we went looking for the stones but in six months, we never met anyone who had traded with him. One day I saw a child playing with a ruby the size of a tangerine. The bandit had been throwing them away."
"So why steal them?"
"Well because he thought it was good sport. Because some men aren't looking for anything logical like money. They can't bought, bullied, reasoned, or negotiated with. Some men just want to watch the world burn."
Just report any griefers you encounter. View their gamercards and select File a Complaint>Tampering>Cheating. Microsoft will ban 'em.
Not necessarily. Microsoft is a big company, and especially considering how many complaints they are working on with Windows 8, the last thing on their minds are banning griefers. Maybe if they grief a lot of people, or they get a lot of complaints about the person, they might get banned, but that is very unlikely.
There are only a few people on this earth that you can trust. I'm not even sure if I can trust myself.
I would regard myself as a trustworthy person I've never griefed anybody, I was today trusted with free use TNT on the Harbor Way server, Im also a moderator and I've only ever shot one person on DayZ after my friend told me to (he was also trapped in the school with 20+ zombies so it was probably a quicker death for him anyway.)
The amount of times I've been shot in the back of the head by people who say friendly on DayZ is crazy.

As I said, there are only a few people you can trust, and your probably one of them. DayZ is a pretty good game, though.
Griefer = Garbage human being. These people are trash not only in Minecraft, but IRL too. There isn't a single one who is a good person in anyway, shape, or form. If I found one IRL, I would beat them to death. No bull.

Griefing is just fun. I think you're taking it way too seriously. Just exit without saving when someone greifs you. That's the whole meaning. They're trying to test you and see if you're actually smart.
I've let known grief ears in my worlds just to see how inventive they are. Anyone can lay TNT. But how can you really annoy me. BTW. I need more grief ears. So if ya wanna blow something up, lemme know.

Sometimes you catch people unaware that they've been griefed.
And honestly griefing is much like borrowing somebody car, taking it to the beach then burning it.
They let you see what they've done and trust you, then because you have no awareness of the pain you might be causing them you steal their stuff and destroy their buildings.
Inability to imagine how somebody else might take your actions is associated with serial killers who do things for fun without thinking of the grief given to people's families.

O You're acting like I killed somebody. If you or anybody else gets griefed, deal with it. No one died. No one got hurt (physically). You shouldn't be overreacting.
I'll take in all of the hate from you or anybody else, but it's not that big of a deal.

People don't take kindly too it. You can also be banned from Xbox Live for it as it likely falls under harassment. Just because you aren't hurting anything real or anyone physically doesn't mean you should do it.

It's so fun, and I do it to people who grief/kill me on my world. Revenge is key when it comes to Minecraft.
They don't really grief me when they join my world. I always exit without saving unless host privileges is on.

Stay fluffy~
