I only play Survival. I' never really worried about clay bricks ,they just seemed too time consuming. If I come across clay I get it and use it decorativley for small things. I've always preferred to build in wood, wool and processed cobble. So now the time comes that I have a need for clay and the time to hunt for it. I need tips for the easiest ways to locate and obtain the clay needed for the red bricks. So i have no idea so any info would be helpfull. My seed is basically one fairly (not huge) island with about 5 rivers chopping the corners off. if that helps?
Do I basically need the underwater helmet for breathing, the light enhancing thing and fortune and silktouch. Does Clay want a shovel or pick axe? Inform me.
Search on the edges of the water near land or any relatively shallow water. It is typically surrounded or close to sand. I typically just look for groups of sand underwater and then as I get closer look for the grey clay block.
I usually find clay in swamp biomes, not sure if this helps you or not.
Also, not sure if anyone else has noticed this, but when you are in water, digging blocks that are underwater, it is faster to break them when your head is above water. I've noticed this with all blocks, it seems to take twice as long if they, and you, are underwater.
Traveling down the rivers and widening them for boat travel will yield enough clay for small projects. For larger projects I go to deep water and the ocean with a respiration helmet. I use a shovel. SIlk touch gives you the clay block not the clay balls.
Beta 1.6.6: Don't even bother.
Post-Beta 1.6.6: Check around sandy areas near water.
Currently: Essentially anywhere underwater and near dirt or sand. Even village farms can spawn clay. Swamps are best due to the more shallow water.
thanks. I'll take that on board. I still think it's a pain in the ****. I remember when there was seeds with bulk clay out of water.
Large swamps still generally do have a fair bit of clay visible in the shallow waters. There is actually more clay in swamps than there ever was in the seeds you're remembering where you would find pockets of clay on the beaches along the water's edge. Clay can also be found along rivers and at the ocean's edge. You just not above the water level much anymore. Although I don't build brick structures in many of the seeds I've played, I'm sure that there has been enough clay readily available to do so if I had wanted to. It's only on the seeds where there is a fair bit of ocean biome (e.g. survival island) that I've had to go deep underwater to obtain it.
Clay is one of my favourite items to mine.
Although I often drown because I get caught up in mining and forget to go up for air, lol.
I've never heard of the respiration helmet, how do you make it?

Enchantment table will make helmet, may take a few try's though.

Add me if you like I play mostly COD, but I do play alot of Minecraft also.
Carry doors and jack-o-lanterns with you for extended underwater mining expeditions. When I get to my desired depth, I usually dig out a block and place a jack-o-lantern, and a door on top of it. You can breath in a space occupied by a door, so instead of constantly surfacing, you can just scatter a few doors and go to them when low on air. The `lanterns make it easier to locate the doors and light up a little bit of the surrounding area.
Torches can work for a quick breath so long as you are near a 2-high step - just make sure you are occupying the same space you are placing the torch (head level).

Shovel is the optimal tool for clay, although anything will break it and yield clay balls
