I am working on a throne room for a Skyrim style build and I am completely stumped when it comes to lighting this place up. I have tried adding glowstone to the ceiling but there is another floor above it, and I have found it to be ugly anyway. I really want to use something besides torches. Need suggestions. This is on survival by the way and fire spread is enabled.
Only light producing things are torches, redstone torches, fire,Active furnaces, glowstone, jack o lanterns and lava.
So your options are a bit limited seeing as Fire spread is on..
I have used tricks with pistons before, but I cant really find a way to light the center of the room with the design I have, the top of pistons are too bright for use throughout most of the room and the other sides would require me to incorporate stone elsewhere in my build.
Keep in mind you CAN still use fire but keep this in mind...
Fire will spread over flammable surfaces, slowly causing all the blocks it can reach to burn away. Fire can climb up walls, across floors and ceilings, and over small gaps. More precisely, a fire (or still lava) block can turn any air block that is adjacent to a flammable block into a fire block. This can happen at a distance of up to one block downwards, one block sideways (including diagonals), and four blocks upwards of the original fire source.

Redstone Torches are a bad lighting source because they aren't bright enough to stop mobs from spawning.
Try turning your gamma all the way up! (Its under Options!) It may add a little bit of a faded look to the game but its a lot brighter! I can not like with out it!
not 100% sure but i think if you put a glowstone block behind the stairs at the bottoms of the pillars it will let light shine though. Not around my xbox so i cant check it, but it used to work atleast

That will be something that will be fixed eventually I am sure. The reason for that right now is stairs are in a way considered transparent to some degree. Whether the light level goes through them or not is another matter.... but has that appearance.

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.

Your right I forgot to mention that if it still works, it's not real light. It's just a glitch. Of course if the concern is mob spawning you can make the floor out of slabs and not worry about it

True but he made no mention of peaceful or anything like that.. just lighting ideas. Besides he could half slab the whole floor and still be fine with a little red mood lighting

Also you could replace the piller block with glowstone or pumpkin where the torches are and put trap doors on each side as well.
Just some ideas...
Is there a floor below that, if not then maybe glowstone or pumpkin in a hole with a trap door at the top. 2x1 hole that is.
