No I mean a flat out limit on how many crops you can plant. I was planting wheat when suddenly I hit a limit. Everytime I planted a seed, it would either shoot right back up with the one right beside it. If it did stay, one farther back would pop up.

Was the wheat within 4 blocks of a water source? If not, then there is your problem, or is the area you were planting them not well lit. Those can cause Wheat to "die" and pop out.
Otherwise I don't think there is a limit. How much wheat have you planted about?

Sounds like the area in which you were planting was too dark to support plant life.
I have a world with thousands upon thousands of wheat, so....
2 blocks from water, 5 from a 2 torches. There is hundreds of wheat around.
Torches produce (I believe) light level 14. Every space you move away from a torch reduces the light level by one. Doesn't matter which direction you move. Going north one block then east one block is not one block away, the game counts it as two blocks for calculating light level. So at roughly five blocks away from the torches, you're right at level 9 light.
Crops need a minimum of light level 9 to grow or the seeds pop back out. I would suggest double checking your light level as that sounds like the problem. Try using glowstone or jack-o-lanterns as they produce light level 15 or try adding more torches.
IF we have one, it's something over 35,000. My Xbox has been planting off and on all weekend and we're quitting there. We haven't hit a limit, so there may not even be one.

Damn dude!! Thanks for your checking. I tried adding more torches and just couldnt plant anymore on that row. Said f it, tore them all up and replaced them with suger cane. Moved all my crops to the top of my tower.

If you're below 35,208 of them (my exact count so far), I can't even begin to guess what the issue might have been. Sorry. If I get a chance to set it back up, I may let the Xbox plant more wheat this weekend. It would make sense that there is some sort of limit; but there is certainly no sign of my reaching it yet.
Just out of curiosity, how do you know that you have planted that many? Surely, you haven't sat there counting them? LOL
Superflat world that had 728 wheat planted in the villages on the map then I've planted 862 blocks (width of map) x 40 rows = 35,208. Rubber bands on controller, so I just have to make sure I'm there when Steve needs to make a turn. An occasional sheep will also throw him off the line.

Stay fluffy~
I've been testing this out tonight - 8,600 wheat planted successfully so far with no sign of any limitation yet.
ETA: 17,240 wheat planted and still counting.

And you sir have waaay too much time to spare. LOL
OT: You must've done something wrong OP.
26,548 at still counting... LOL (retirement/old age... can be like that). Actually, rubber bands are doing a lot of the work.
That sure would make ALOT of bread!!

That makes sense. LOL
For some reason, I imagined you making a huge farm on a normal world, ie; not superflat.
The hills...they're a-livin'!
