I'm thinking about building a medival-style "fortress village" that I use as my home. Of course I want to populate it with villagers. Building a fortress into/around a village is an option, but I'd rather build it from scratch and populate it afterwards.
So, how can I make villagers move into their new homes considering that my fortress might be some distance away?
I've already encountered villagers quite far away from their village, swimming in the middle of the ocean, climbing mountains, and so on.

Is it a chicken or is it a duck? - It's a chuck, because dicken sounds stupid.
You can try using a minecart and a rail, or make an underground water canal that pushes it where you need to go. Just dig down one block every 7 or 8 steps to keep the water flowing. Keep in mind with the latter method, that the further you need to go, the lower your villager will be. When you get it to the desired location you will probably have to make a staircase or straight up shaft with a water elevator to get them to the surface.
Another way is to add doors to the village leading to your direction, deleting them as they walk by the doors so that they can't go back. You'd have to repeat this process a lot depending on the distance, and on how much wood you've got.

See, there's this thing I noticed: villagers don't give a crap about doors. If I opened all the doors in a village and let the villagers out of their houses, I'd have an abandoned village along with a bunch of ex-villagers strewn in all directions.

Water channels and minecarts are definitely a good idea.

That's correct... at least on the Xbox. The villager AI has not yet given them the ability to open doors on their own, so all the other AI about them liking doors and desiring to return to their own village has not been implemented yet either. The benefit is that if you do relocate them via minecart and put them in a house, they'll stay put even if you just have a door on the house... for now at least.

Water is a good idea. You can make the water flow upwards with slabs and signs so you don't have to worry about an elevator or anything to push them up when they get there.
railroads are good ideas, but i took me 30 blocks of iron to make my trip.at lease got on a rail
If you don't want a railroad where you need to go with your villager(s) in minecarts, you can actually do it with a very small number of rails... it just takes a long time. You lay a bit of track ahead of the cart, push it a ways, and then tear up track behind the cart.
