The one thing that always seems to allude me is how to make a secure animal farm.
animals always seem to disappear
made one up in the sky and they vanished and assumed they were glitching out walls and falling down.
now on new map got one on the ground, the city has a few buildings all within a large walled area. created a farm where didnt want to kill them wanted a big group to reproduce faster so me and a friend made a large fenced off corner of the wall. wall is about 10 high and the fence is 3 high.
Had 20 cows went to get more wood as thought id build a roof, came back and all but 1 cow has disappeared, theyre not even just outside the fenced area they are gone
its all stone, is there any conditions im forgetting thats maybe killing them off, do they need dirt, water, too long since their last feeding?
There isn't really a way, except if you notice breeding not working or animals disappearing when you breed. Just keep the wild animal population low around the farms and you should be good, although my farms are much smaller than yours. I only keep approx 4-5 of each animal, not 20
!) The interior of your pen must be smaller than 20 x 20. Animals will despawn if they can move more than 20 blocks in any direction.
2) When you first put your animals in their pen, you must feed them. If you have a pair, breed them right away. If you don't, still feed the one you got and put it into love mode. (I just proved this one up today. I brought one sheep from across my survival island map and put it in the pen and then went to get a second. When I came back with the second one, the first one had despawned. So, I penned the second one and fed it wheat; putting it into love mode even though I had no mate for it. After it came out of love mode, i left to get another one from the same spot on the map where I got the other two. This time when I came back, the one in the pen was still there. Feeding it the wheat before leaving to get a mate for it made all the difference.)
3) Double-wide fences are better than double-high ones at keeping the animals from respawning upon reload of the game on the wrong side of the fence.
On youtube theres lots of automatic systems but dont think they all work on xbo
is there any automatic way to feed the animals
also is there a way to get trees growing inside?
google says light and 4 blocks above the sapling is all you need but ive never been able to get a tree to grow
Trees need more height. I had an indoor tree farm on earlier world. I'd say you need to have about 10 blocks above your sapling. They will grow 5 or 6 high with leaves on top of that, so make sure you have the height for them to grow. Make sure there is about 5 blocks between each sapling. If they don't have enough space, they won't grow. Hope this helps
thanks, was only wanting it indoors to try and limit the growth and make it easier for farming, keep getting tree's that arent just 1 large wooden column they have wood going out in all directions and they are near impossible to cut down efficently, last time i just set fire to them to get rid of it
need to find a new way, when i saw online they only needed 4 i thought that would be a good way to keep them short
So far been lucky, except with chickens. My two cows stay in their pen, as do all my sheep (one of each color). Though, I did feed them all on their way in, and most spawned ON, IN, or NEAR my house, so that probably also helped.

Since now wood has different types, I had to add oak trees to my farm, and I was afraid of the same thing (huge trees with branches going every which way high up--birch trees don't have this problem). I thought of making a glass ceiling above them, but I went the easy way first and just planted a bunch with 4 spaces in between them. (They grow fine this way, and you get a continuous leaf canopy.) The first oak that sprang up did indeed sprawl out all over the place. But all the trees growing after that were shorter and straight. They constrain each other. So the thing to do when I need oak wood is to chop down every other one. That will ensure that saplings I plant to replace them won't have room to get too big or too chaotic. It doesn't look like I need that glass ceiling after all.
Edit: Wrong! Yes, I do need the ceiling. After some more farming, some of the new trees got huge, even though they were constrained in a 5x5 area apiece. So I took the time to build the glass ceiling. According to the wiki, leaving 8 spaces free (between ground and ceiling) is best, so that's what I did.
To grow trees inside, what I usually do is make a space 7-8 blocks high, and in the shape of a pyramid. The space needs to be at least 5x5 wide. If you're doing an indoor tree farm, I would leave at least 6 spaces between saplings. It's been a while since I did this, but I'm pretty sure those were the dimensions I used and it worked great.

Hmm, that must be what happened to my mooshroom. I took the time to lure two of them all the way from the island to my forest homestead, only to have one vanish several days later. I never bothered feeding them because I only needed two. Thanks for the information.

6 spaces is a bit extreme, but at least they would grow a decent rate... Minimum is 2 spaces between each tree, unless it is spruce you are talking about which best results for minimum were 4 spaces.
7 height is the minimum for birch and oak. 8 is minimum for spruce.
5x5 space for each is minimum for all, but with spruce I tend to do a 7x7, do to the fact they sometimes have a 3 leaf out from the trunk formation.
All in all spruce takes up the most space, since those are more picky when growing inside. The dimensions I used make it so they grow about as much as the other two.
Also oak can theoretically grow next to each other, but wouldn't advise it unless you want to make a bonemeal harvester.lol

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.

I believe the minimum is 8 block high ceiling, and they din't need space between them unless you are using bonemeal.

well hell, always learning something. Maybe I'll play around with some of others techniques and see what happens. I've got some open space in my caves I can dig out for a tree farm.

Don't waste your time until they get this crap fixed.
Very disappointing.
Am i ok with the brick walls or do I need to put fences?
As long as the walls are 2 high you should be fine
