Just wondering if anyone wastes wood building ladders, or do you use vines? I used vines on the side of a ravine and makes getting out easy. They spread, so you can harvest them as well. Actually have a few on trees around my house that I clip from time to time as the nearest swamp is well away from my base.
No, I have a Vine Farm which I use to get organic ladders. Vines grow quicker when they dangle off a block rather than growing vertically down on a block. So all I do is make a horizontal bar 5 blocks high and as wide as you like and plant a ton of starting vines. Then all you have to do is cut from the bottom to keep getting more. With one set of sheers i can usually get 2 and a half stacks of vines so its a good ratio.
I make ladders for the speed of placing but will place several vines at the tops of ravines/caves when exploring the surface so by the time I'm ready to explore underground there is a ready made vine to climb.

I don't call it wasting wood because wood is renewable and infinite. You can never run out of it unless you're really not paying attention and chop down all the trees without replanting any.
I only put ladders in my house/build if I made it too small for steps to easily and nicely fit. I never use vines for climbing on my builds, and I have yet to create anything that uses water or mine carts for getting up, but I have some ideas in mind for those.

All depends on what I am building and where I want certain items. Ladders I do use for climbing & décor still like the other means of the climb up/down. If it looks like it belongs, then so be it.
The one thing I do not like about vines at the moment is no way to cut off the end of them off to stop growth. If and when they put in string as placeable is when I might use as décor more often. Right now the only way to cut them off is liquids and that doesn't always look appropriate in mid-air.
Water, ladders, and vines are all a good way for up/down, if not making a path for stairs to wind up/down to destinations. That and combination of them.:D

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.

This is a great idea. I'll make one of these tonight, will be easier than putting them on my trees.
For really high climbs, that are used often, I prefer a boat/water source block elevator. Cuts travel time in half or less. I use ladders occasionally when building, but the only time I really used vines was as a fall damage reset on my endermen farm.
I've always used ladders for climbing and stuff. Vines I use more for decoration, but they have to be very controlled. I normally put a block on both side, or make the wall out of blocks vines can;t grow on, or no wall at all. Heh, that rhymes.
I think the only time I really ever climbed a vine was when I was in a PvP map. It was in a swamp biome (obviously) and my persuer was trudging through the water below flinging arrows at me. I pillared up enough to grab the vines and then leapt from tree to tree lighting them ablaze as I went.
I only use ladders if I cant build a staircase. For long ascents/descents I like to use water elevators and water breaks (brakes?).

Retired StaffOf course I still use ladders, though. Vines just look plain silly in a lot of places.
Keep yourself up to date with the Minecraft Forum rules!
Also remember you have to find a biome with vines in first so it balanced
Hey everyone, I'm back!
Stay fluffy~
You've peeked my curiousity over the TNT...

True. I do like to put the vines on the edge of ravines and get down that way. I need to use the water/sign trick more though.
That was an issue I didn't think of, so yeah, you'd use ladders.
Good ideas here, lots of different uses to incorporate into my worlds.
