I play minecraft almost everyday and I'm a girl! I've always been into video games (Halo, Portal, Etc.) I don't really play online that often (I prefer SPM because I just like to play by myself!) I just reaallly hate the term "Gamer girl" and "Girl Gamer". Do males call themselves boy gamers? No, they don't. It really doesn't make you special, just because you like something that all lot of boys enjoy. It's just Gamer, that's it! I will admit, boys have acted differently around me when I showed interest in video games.<_< But still, I have never labelled myself as *Gag* "Girl Gamer".
My Wife plays Minecraft, though she doesn't like playing on Computer just Xbox. She also plays COD, all the Fables, and a number of other games. She wasnt a gamer when we started dating 12 years ago, but now she plays more than me and her K/D ratio is sometimes better than mine. So keep at them girlfriends guys, cause the couple that slays together, or builds, mines, farms etc... stays together.
She does get alot more friend requests and messages though her gamertag has girl in it so shes always getting people asking if shes really a girl or wanting to be friends.
I get hit on by girl gamers all the time, it's so annoying. Just kidding.
Recent statistics state that the ratio of male to female gamers is roughly 60/40 and approximately 44% of gamers are female.
Minecraft has a higher percentage of females than games like Battlefield 3 for example.
From years of online gaming I have noticed that a lot of the girls that do game have a genderless gamertag and keep their mic off to avoid harassment. The gamertag is understandable so they don't get a lot of nasty messages, but it is a shame they get so much crap they have to turn their mics off.
Also take note of the girl gamers that flaunt the fact they are girls and use it for means of attention. They in no way represent female gamers as a whole. As weird as it is to type this, they are just normal people too. It shouldn't have to be such a big deal of what gender you are when it comes to playing games.
I enjoy survival and teamwork. If you're at least 15+ with a mic go ahead and send me a friend request on XBOX live, don't be shy! Regardless of your race, gender, or any disability I will play with you as long as you don't have a crappy Kinect.

That's what I do. When I first started gaming I had my mic on constantly, but every time I talked to people in the lobby I was either called a "squeaker" or males harassed me. I imagine it's the same for many women. These days I couldn't care less, I can dish it out as well as I can take it.

Yes we do play Minecraft I love this game and I am so glad my friends introduced me to it. It's a nice break from CoD and the idiots that RareTalent mentioned. "Make me a sandwich" "I don't think you are playing games in the kitchen" You know, until you completely own them and at the end of the game you casually say "I want mayo with that sandwich dear" It's all fun and games though.
If girls didn't hide so much.
They probably wouldn't be discriminated towards... So much.
The common misconception that girls rarely play video games only aids itself in that to avoid harassment they hide themselfs to avoid being singled out as a minority when they really aren't.
After this thread I feel I have a much greater knowledge of a lady and the cations they take around video games.

I put my shirt on one leg at a time, just like everybody else.
The typical phenomenon in nature is male pursuing female. In video games that seems exacerbated due to the anonymity and lack of negative social consequences. The best ways to avoid harassement are hide your identity, play with other girls or just play with more mature players. I'm a male and when I play COD games i often have my mic off due to squeakers. To me COD is a team game so if I have to mute several people in a lobby then I switch lobbies or play another game. There seems to be a lot less "make me a sandwich" comments in minecraft. They may just be the servers I'm on.
So do women feel you get more "make me a sandwich" comments in minecraft or other game platforms?

If you think COD is a team game you are strongly mistaken.
It's one of the most lone wolf games of the market.
What possible advantage do you get by sticking with a friend other than somebody to avenge you?

I play objective based modes and it is a team work game. More bodies on an objective take it faster, players positioned to provide cover fire for players capturing, defendeing multiple captured points, etc. Just because some people don't play as a team doesn't change the rules or how you win. Just like in Football the rules are set up to benefit those playing as a team.
But I digress. If you disagree about the COD comment fine, but you see what I'm saying about muting? Or is that not an issue for you?
I could name off at least 10 or 15 girls I play with regularly. Although the majority of my friends list are male. I will say that in reality, I meet more girls that are interested in minecraft than guys. Bottom line is minecraft is a mental stimulant, that most all intellectuals enjoy, so being male or female doesn't change much about who is playing.

They still would. The internet is full of preteen boys who think that "sammich" jokes are still funny. I find that many of the younger set play games with their "real life" friends, so when you get one "sammich" joke, you get tons.

I completely agree with you. COD is a team game, it's just that most people don't play it like one. Everyone's interested in their K/D, but K/D doesn't mean anything if you lose every game because you're camping.
To your other point, I don't play Minecraft with people I don't know often, but I've never gotten a single "make me a sandwich" from people I've played with on it.
Yes, we do. Both my sister and I are avid Minecraft players. And my sister has a few female friends who play as well. Though we are gamers and we enjoy most awesome games. ;3

and this is true.. it's a medical fact!
If a band plays more songs than unique chords, there's a problem.
Last I checked, yes.
It's understandable, though, I've had male avatar pictures since joining the forums.
