In a round about way it's coming. Reseting the nether gives unlimited lava and when (fingers crossed) we get iron golems or villager trading supposedly that can give you unlimited iron. I don't like losing my iron to the furnace either.
I don't like using lava in a furnace simply because the furnace won't hold 100 blocks at once anyway. I prefer to use fuels where I can readily arrange it so that none of the fuel is wasted. That is, if I have a number of items to smelt that are divisible by 8, I'll use either coal or charcoal. If the number is divisible by 12, I'll use blaze rods. In addition, you don't get XP from scooping up lava in a bucket and you do get XP for collecting blaze rods, for mining coal, and even for smelting wood into charcoal. Of these three, coal is the only resource that is not completely renewable already. Lava is now renewable, but you do have to forfeit any building you've done in the nether (e.g. you might be eliminating your blaze farm). Iron currently is non-renewable and is not quite as common as coal. It just seems to me like a big, big waste to use lava in a furnace nomatter from what angle you look at it.
Lose three iron to smelt one hundred iron blocks? I'd do it.
Buckets smelt 100, not 900.
You'd be smelting 100 Iron Ore into 100 Iron Ingots.
Anyhow, I always found using them pointless.
I stick to Coal in the beginning and eventually transition over to Blaze Rods.
Sure, it's not efficient, but they're renewable.
I have over a full stack of iron blocks. That's 9 ingots a block. I can easily afford to lose a bucket now and again.
Aside from that, I rarely use lava as a fuel. I use coal, charcoal, and blaze rods. Two of those are renewable and will never run out. They're also extremely easy to obtain in mass quantities.

Was this ever implemented in PC? It would only make since. Why would I even think about losing 3 iron just to smelt 100 blocks?
Seems useless to me.
