I have heard and seen lots of information regarding Minecraft releasing a physical disc edition for Xbox360, but not much regarding what it contains. Does anyone know if it is going to have anything that an updated version of Minecraft downloaded from the Marketplace doesn't already have? Or will it just be the same thing, meaning that, if I already own Minecraft, there would be no point in purchasing the disc unless I just wanted a hard copy for whatever reason?
There is nothing special about the disc version. I thought it was more geared towards people who might not be able to download from XBL so they can get the game to more people.

I think if you were really into Minecraft then you would just pay to get XBL given that you've already paid for Minecraft so why wouldn't you just go all out.
If you have internet, you probably already have MC. There's no real reason to get the disk then, as you can redownload it for free whenever you want. The only reason I see for getting the disk is so you can give it to your friends.

Giving it to your friends might be the only reason to buy the CD. It's a more blatant way to get them to play, by delivering the exact game you wish to play with them to their hands in a physical format.
It'll also reduce the cost of MC360, because folks will sell it to gameStop, and Gamestop will sell the used discs for less than retail.
Otherwise, the expense of pressing CDs hardly outweighs the market of 2 people in America who own 360's but lack an internet connection.
I exagerate, but it's close enough. There are very few people who own a 360 who also don't have internet access. The type of person drawn to buy a 360 is the type of person who has internet access and thus is in position to take advantage of the 360's features for online play, streaming movies, etc.

If you have purchased your xbox within the past few years, then it has one built in. Or you could always use an ethernet cord, like people had to do before wireless...

I am more than sure 4J will release an exclusive a skin or something along with the purchase of the retail version of MC360, like they always do with other games.
I'd imagine something to do with "box on shelf" image so people will think its a "real" game instead of just a downloadable. Now it will sit on the shelf next to Call of Duty, Skyrim, etc and hopefully prompt more sales. Some marketing/sales guy thought it was a good idea.
The real shame is they've sold 7M copies and we still have to wait forever for updates. At $20 a pop [roughly] that is $14M USD. Seems that 4JSteve is the only guy actually working on updates anymore. They could easily hire a few more folks to get it caught up to PC super fast.
The xbox version will never "get caught up to the PC" (even 'super fast' with extra people). It is only suppose to be close to the PC up to a certain point (1.2). After that it gets it's own special features unique to the xbox (or, as they put it, "goes it's own way").
However, now there's the One version to think about. It too will not follow the PC exactly, but have it's own different set of upgrades and features. Two different versions, two different platforms, two different producers, two different everything. The xbox version(s) will never be like the PC anymore than the PC will be like the xbox.
In my mind the question isn't "When is the xbox gonna catch up to the PC?"- the question will be "When is the PC gonna get the cool stuff the xbox has?"

At this rate, never.
I dunno. I work in software development for a living and honestly, the biggest issue they are most likely facing is resources [time] since 4J is a relatively small company. They don't have the army of developers that say... Blizzard has. I speculated when the updates started getting further and further apart and delayed that they had pulled most all of the team to work on the "next gen console" version and E3 confirmed that without saying it directly. Mojang doesn't exactly have an army of devs either so it wouldn't take much to get them on the same page of whatever level they want to shoot for. Was 1.2 quoted as the "mirror" level they were going for before they fork off?
I am curious how they will "branch off" as I've seen the same comments that you mentioned regarding how it will not be an identical clone of PC version forever. Sad part is, I'm kinda cool with it being exactly like PC. Makes it a lot easier to manage info [wiki, etc] across platforms! I'll be sad if anvils, hoppers, and some of the other newer items don't make it in. I'd assume even if they "do their own thing" they would still take some of the cool stuff like that but really it is "dealer's choice" at that point...

What exactly is this 'cool stuff the xbox has' that the PC doesn't? I have both and playing the Xbox version with my friend I only find myself frustrated the stairs won't flip upside down yet....and no jungles, yet we have cocoa beans. (Or maybe I misunderstood, and you mean in the future when they add stuff that isn't in the PC version?)
Only advantage I've seen is not needing to memorize crafting recipes, which (although it can be frustrating) is really a big part of Minecraft in my mind.
