You use signs...when the cactus grows to 3 high, it breaks off into a water channel and delivered to your pick-up point. I did one on my first world, but didn't really think it worked that well. Perhaps they could make it a food item after it's cooked.
so basically its not exactly true what overlook says. they do not farm there selves. they do need some type of help from us. weather its a sign that we place, or us just breaking it down, it does need help to be farmed

[Splitting hairs] Well, they do farm themselves if there is a sign over them. [/Splitting hairs] The "auto farm" entails planting a cactus, then placing a transparent block (glass and signs work - not sure what else) one or two blocks up on one of the four sides of the cactus. Basically, the growth tic occurs, a new cactus block forms, then breaks instantly since cactus can't be placed next to another block. Overlook placing the sign may cause the cactus to break, but the sign will continue to allow growth / cause drops. You have to keep going back to manually harvest when you're just breaking it down yourself.
The auto farm will keep dropping cactus until you dismantle it - you just have to walk by to pick it up.

i still consider it farming ourselfs since we are the once that placed the signs. now if you can find a sign and a cactus right by eachother in the game without placing it then its self farming. but i dont even think they have signs generated in minecraft

Besides random green dye needs, I've only used them as creeper defense. Most notoriously in a group game on hard-survival mode. We took over an NPC village and decided to live in the church tower, so we expanded it and all set off collecting what we needed and gathering food. Three or four days later I revealed my master plan: whilst the others were out spelunking a iron filled cave, I created a 4 30x10 at 17 high checkerboard walls around the entire town, plus some room allowed for farming and the ability to kill all enemies. I had made a gate for players to come and go as they pleased, but the host's girlfriend was unable to make it through (don't get me started) so they burned it down.

Check it out for awesome tutorials and constant content!
primarily I use them to troll friends or use them for garbage disposal. Before the most recent update I would place a cactus and then spawn a ghast on the cactus. No matter the difficulty a very loud scream will be heard, and it scares people.
No, sadly it was not. She simply was terrible at walking in a straight line.
