well, i made an interesting discovery today. i started a new seed in easy mode and one of the first things i do is build a small tree house to spend my nights in. As i was building my tree house, a thought occured to me. Can i grow trees on top of trees to make a larger tree for a large tree house? the answer is: YES!.
i start by either finding or growing what my old lady calls "An Amazon Tree". This is an oak that is about 9-15 blocks tall with several "branches". the larger the better. I made my way to the top of the tree and knocked out the leaves that were the center of the "+" on the top of the tree. a large Amazon tree can have up to 5 of these. I knock out the center leaves and place a dirt. then place a Oak sapling. If you are impaitent and have the bonemeal to spare, you can instant grow the tree, otherwise, you have to wait until it grows. If you are lucky, you will get another Amazon tree. possibly even 5. if you dont get a good sized tree, chop it down and try it again. once the new trees are grown, find your way to the tops of those trees and repeat the process. you can continue this up to max build height.
when all done, you have a massive tree that you can build a large and complex tree house in.
It's fun when people discover these kinds of things on there own. I will warn you though, this is a really common thing and is widely known and practiced in Minecraft.
I'm just going to wait for Jungle Trees instead of doing that.
I have one I'm working on right now, It started with 5 big oaks in a circle which I filled in, then I plant and grow more as I ascend. Hopefully it will look good when I'm done so I can show it to you guys. If it looks like dog crap it will be my little shameful secret.
well, you could use a silk touch tool to get oak leaves from other trees to fill in the ugly parts, that is what i am planning on doing when i get serious about building my actual tree house.
yeah, those jungle trees look great, but i dont think i can wait that long. i figure it will be 6 months to year before we get jungle. i could be wrong. so i will stick to using oaks until we do get them.

Why waste a good tool and silk touch when you can use shears to get leaves? lol
i never thought of using sheers on trees. i use them on sheep, grass, and vines. i usually end up using my silk touch/unbreaking/efficiency diamond axe to collect the leaves.
I have taken stacks of wood before and made a tree about 12 blocks diameter then starting around 30 blocks up planted trees around the top. That was probably my best tree house. Not very big but that was before silk touch shears so it was very involved.

yea, like has been said this is a common known fact. also. in me and my friends experimentation with tree growth. we planted many trees beside each other. forcing growth with bonemeal (a lot of bonemeal at least 10 pieces, since tree growth is random and it has t find a pattern that isn't hindered by the other tree) this process creates a larger bas for your tree, which makes its taller height more realistic. also. you can force trees to grow tall and narrow, and with planning you can change the basic shape of a tree using water. since trees cant grow in water. we got one to grow over 20 blocks high and the leaves are floating attached to nothing in a almost x pattern. which was the pattern of the water fountain w grew it in.

yea this is me (always have fire spreads on) trying to get to my burning tree (griefers not lightning)

For lightning strikes, hide some tnt in the leaves. Not gonna lie, does plenty of damage but iv had it stop some fires
