Please correct me if info is wrong and tell me what you think. I'm considering starting a survival server to run 24/7.
So the server is basically an xbox with good internet connection and an xbox gold membership. Most 'servers' are called 24/7 but ussually shut down at least once a day to clear out lag. Am I missing anything?
So setting up a server (assuming existing internet connection) would cost $200? for an xbox and $60? a year for xbox gold.
Some issues with servers:
1- lag; too many people on at one time and server running too long
shutting the server down periodically and having people that play in different time zones may help here
2- animal spawn
limits can create issues but a common animal farming area can fix this
3- personal preference; map already worked, dragon dead, nether developed, etc.
reseting the nether periodically can freshen the map
4- people griefing, using duplication glitches, etc.
zero tolerance and ban people immediately
I have been on serveral peoples servers and have found issues to be common with most. I'm not complaining about the servers just looking for information/ideas. And to see what people are looking for in a server. Rules for servers is an issue. I have seen several servers with extensive list of rules (50+). But it seems there would be a few simple things that most people could follow. No matter how many rules you have someone will find a way around it. Looking for a few simple rules that cover the basics. Any ideas/suggestions for a survival server.
The rules in mine are simple. I think things being too restricted would be an issue.. I recommend buying a used Xbox with the warranty from gamestop.. If anything happens you can simply replace it with your warranty. I recommend ethernet cable not wi-fi. I personally would reset nothing in the map unless everyone in the group agreed with it. And do what I did a Slow influx of people so that you're able to pin point the problematic ones.. Good luck!
And if you remember from the message I sent.. a zero tolerance thing is the way to go... Weed out the bad keep the good!

Personally I used to be @ 15...but then as the world gets bigger these saves can take upwards of 5mins+ per save.. So I bumped it to 30.
30 seems like a good #.

my setup is no damaging or stealing others property and since people where complaining about people entering their houses when they werent around, i added the entering homes without permission rule.. also new players need somebody to vouch or co-sign for them to join
just remember to get good people on your server, kick problems immediately and set a standard for behavior.. you can have as many or as little rules as you want but the people you have in the server will ultimately make the experience good or bad
The 30 minutes deal is something I have seen on several servers and that seems to work. For a 24 hour server there has to be an autosave feature used. Nobody wants to spend a weekend building only to lose it to a connection/power glitch.
I had actually considered not saving killing the dragon and redoing that once a month for new poeple but it only takes one person to go kill the dragon when autosave is on for it to be over. wish you could reset the end also.
As you know, I don't have a whole lot of experience with server-based worlds, but here's my basically uninformed opinions (take with a big grain of salt).
I think you should have a no griefing policy - which would enable you to have a basis to weed out the troublemakers. If you go the "no holds barred" approach, it's pretty difficult to oust someone and that might make it diificult to keep the good players coming back.
Re the no x-ray glitch rule... Although I agree with the rule in principle, I think it might be pretty much impossible to enforce since it can be done with minimal supplies and without leaving much telltale sign that it was done.
I don't think there is much point in resetting the nether every Tuesday, although it probably wouldn't matter a whole bunch if you did or didn't since very few people would probably build much there anyway. Glowstone may be optained through killing blazes, netherrack is now convertible into nether brick, and nether wart now grows all over, so most people shouldn't really run out of nether resources either. Resetting the end (if we could do it) would be more useful.
I think the environmental preservation rule is a good idea, especially if you extend it into nether... which would ensure that people don't run short of nether wart and mushrooms.
I think the limit on paintings and item frames is reasonable. There should also be limits on number of domesticated animals as well so that anyone on the server can have an opportunity to farm at least something.
I like building with obsidian so lava is a big deal for me but don't want to vastly alter the nether for everyone.
I have no idea if this is ok or doable or what but someone told me i should take the disk tray out of the xbox and that would help with power and cooling issues. Like I said I have no idea about that.

I have a fan pointing upwards from the exit fan in the back (Heat rises so I give it the extra push up).... Xbox also is elevated so all the air ports are open. But the disc doesn't run so don't take off the disc drive..
Also make an obisidian generator so You'll use the same lava constantly.... You'd be using up redstone is all.

Yea I have seen the obsidian generators but two issues have come up. Other people on the map wanting to use a lot of redstone and some of my projects have used over 8000 obsidian blocks for a pyramid. Typically for those projects I 'form pour' lava and turn it for 85% of the project then some areas are just easier to use mined obsidian.

True. Fortunately redstone can be "fortuned", alleviating the loss a bit. You know i've never tried the "mold" obsidian thing. I've heard of it, just never used it. But it probably would be convenient. I wish lava was renewable. Like the 2x2 water fountain..

LOL if lava was renewable my world would look like the surface of Mercury.
I approach rules for the game in a modular fashion. i also try to keep it simple, though that can get tricky.
Rules basically get broken into 3 categories: Behavioral, Functional, Thematic.
Behavioral covers stuff that folks should have learned in Kindergarten, like not stealing or hurting others.
Functional covers stuff that keep the world organized. For example, "no PVP, except in Designated Areas" is really contingent on "what'
s a Designated Area. You might say "the whole map", or just the Arena. The definition of a Designated Area is the Thematic decision, this rule just means that you better find out where PVP is legit.
Thematic covers everything else. It's basically what sets the style or tone of your world. Maybe buildings have to be "medieval" in nature with no modern sky scrapers. Maybe Mining has to be conducted underground, with access via a proper Mine Shaft entrance, so that the surface world looks intact.
In any case, try to keep the list of rules short. breaking them into the 3 categories may help with that (because each category can then be short). If you make a long list, folks will think the game is to restrictive. On the other hand, folks who did that kind of thing may be exactly what you're looking for.

i like that breakdown and understand how lots of rules can actually defeat your intended purpose. I'm a landlord and have contracts and applications for people to sign but i tell everyone there are three basic rules. 1- pay the rent on time 2- keep your area clean 3- don't do anything illegal. Those don't cover all contingencies but it gives people something to remember and helps set the tone.
My suggestion, do this: property ownership; others only enter if invited; do what u want in that space (If you do this, then people should expect to be killed if entering peoples houses, no questions asked)
no mob grinders or xp farms (This makes people play more and not get bored)
enviroment preservation; chop a tree plant a tree; repair creeper holes, etc. (Keep the server playable for new comers.)
no duplication or x-ray glitches etc.(This should be a no brainer...)
What does everyone here consider property ownership? From bedrock to sky limit? How large of an area? In a town maybe 15x20 plots are fine but out on your own I'm thinking more in the range of 30 x 30 or larger.
seems the property would need boundary markers to identify claimed areas and a sign saying who owns it. Obviously certain areas of the map like the original spawn and the end portal or mine shafts would have to be communal.
I don't agree with space restrictions.. unless you plan on having dozens of people..If you do something like that you would have to implement a bank/safe and then creative would come into play with a bedrock structure.
