How am I supposed to get enough gunpowder to do this? Im clearing 160,000 blocks and a stack of dynamite would be really nice. Currently Im mining during the day, then going up and using creepers. They either fall far enough to die or I get them to blow in a good spot, or very rarely, get a skeleton to kill it.
You're gonna need a lot more than just "a stack of dynamite".
* You could make several mob traps to collect gunpowder and have the drops delivered to your house via water channels. Course, by the time you did all that you could do a lot of digging on your project.
* Sounds like digging is way more efficient and quicker than gathering/making TNT anyway. I know it's more 'fun' blowing stuff up, but digging away works pretty good.
* Of course, you could just go into creative. Your decision, your project.
How do you know it's 160k? Well just forget the total, get your trunk of picks and dig it man. Relax, maybe have a adult beverage. Just try not to think of the larger total.
If your intent on using dynamite, then a mob grinder is the only solution for you. If your not sure how to build one, check you tube and look up something like ethos mob grinder.

its a 50x50 section im clearing down to bedrock (64 levels). Its probably closer to 140k if there is any caves
It will be awesome when done. But its gonna take awhile. I was originally gonna do a 64x64 but decided against it.
Build a mob spawner, like JSPRINGY said, ethos design works well. Make it 10-12 layers high, light up ALL the caves within 145 block radius of center. Build a tube at the exit for mobs to fall through so you can safely afk. Fill every inventory slot with a single piece of gunpowder, and afk for a day or 2.

I don't make YouTube videos. I play minecraft to have fun.
I'm against TNT mining but how about this:
Build a mob spawner over the are you want to dig. place an obsidian platform at the level you want to keep then use water to push creepers into holes you place. let the creepers explode as you work your way down to avoid the gathering gunpowder step. I can already see a few bugs here but a little experimenting should get you a smooth system going.
When the game first came out we did this. It was a 50x50 hole that went all the way to bedrock and it probably took about 80 hrs to do. Dynamite can be a real pain in the butt if you want to keep your walls from being blown out.
if you're not set on the tnt idea there may be a faster way. with enchantments and an efficientcy 4 diamond pick you can dig pretty fast. Then ad iron feather weight boots and at least protection 4 iron chest for dropping into caves or lava. 3 of us dug a 30 by 30 hole to bedrock before enchantments using iron tools and it wasn't that bad... until... we got to the lava lakes and we decided to pour water and then mine the obsidian. when you get to lava just bucket it into a single block hole if you just want to get rid of it.
I once made a massive mineshaft to bedrock.
My 3rd map or so it was.
Probably started 40 by 40 and had a spiral staircase that made it smaller as it went down.

I put my shirt on one leg at a time, just like everybody else.

How many of you did that take? 80 hrs is a long freakin time, but I,need it for my tower. Ill also need over 300 lava source blocks so once I get to that level ill be collecting a bunch.
If you're set on using TNT - I'd suggest a mob grinder and a sand generator.
Not sure if the sand generator considered duping / glitching, but I recently built a small version based on St3venAU's youtube tutorial, and I love it. No more trekking across the map for sand! Sandstone has gone from a scarce commodity to a readily available building material, and I won't have to ever decide between glass and TNT again.

Grab it from the nether. Never gather on the prime material plane if you can help it: you can reset the nether and thus have unlimited lava, and at much easier access.
I plan on grabbing some from the nether (i know about reseting, my portal drops me beside tons of glowstone) but ill be bucketing ay within my 50x50.
Jeepin, I thought sand generators no longer worked? I used alot for my water slide, my desert looks sickly. That goes from 20 blocks from the sky to bedrock.

The version I'm using is still working as of TU10. It says patched, but I assumed that was referring to PC.
Since this took me a while to figure out: The generator will cease to create additional sand the moment you hit the item cap (200?). Maybe falling sand counts as a drop / sprite item? I'm only generating 11 sand blocks per cycle and try to pick up drops every 10 cycles. I know that it will stop if I don't pick up within 18 cycles. Sometimes less, but I have a cactus farm and a mob grinder in the immediate area that probably reduce the available count as well. FYI, I just made it so that the sand drops onto torches - saves on shovels!

It was four people and we only found lava in one corner. But just outside of it at lvl twelve there were plenty of lava lakes. If you really need that much lava I would put the game on peaceful and go into the nether with your invetory full of emty buckets,
After 25hrs I decided to switch to creative ONLY for the excavation, building will be 100% survival. it killes me to put it in creative, but I was a 100hrs or more away.
Im keeping track of all the iron, lapis, diamond and gold I find and will present that info later. Im supprissed how many of each im finding, perticularly diamonds(iv found more of those than lapis!?!?).
Also turns out part of this is in a slime chunk. I,have almost two stackes of slime.

No desert temples on xbox yet.
I have flame enchantment on a sword.
