I was able to partially recreate this issue. The wheat that wasn't getting harvested was being pushed by pistons going north/south. There's a known bug involving the direction some redstone contraptions are oriented. That might be the issue here. I'm not %100 sure on what the bug is, others could elaborate better on that. As far as the torches go, those can't be placed on farmland. If you replace the tilled land around that one strip with the same kind of block you placed the torches on it should then have the same effect as the wheat.
The North/South quirk is not exclusive to pistons, but is more common in mechanical devices. It is an unexplainable bug; you will only drive yourself mad trying to find a logical reason to your machine's failure. The usual solution is to just build the mechanism on the opposing axis, but the last design will need more extensive alteration. I'm curious about what is actually bugged here. It's obviously not the pistons, as they're still working beautifully. I'm guessing it is somewhere along the lines of wheat blocks not even recognizing the blocks they're connected to being moved North or South. Have you tried harvesting from North/South, but whilst moving a block under the wheat that isn't tilled soil? Even if the wheat still stands, at least you will have a new way to confuse your friends when they see you have wheat growing on a bed of diamond blocks.
Its a very interesting bug you have there. That's also a very neat machine you guys built, but I don't see it being very economical. Have you guys checked your chunk boundaries? Perhaps the wheat is bugging out on a chunk border? Have you tried it in SP? Maybe its related to lag? I'm really not sure on how that wheat stays put, but its cool to look at GL
Humor me and try placing glowstone or blocks with torches on the sides above every 2nd or 3rd wheat. I had this issue before and I believe its caused by failing a block update. When I 'lit' the area up with light above the wheat it all worked.
I dunno if it will solve the issue for you or not but its worth a try.
this is a weird glitch. ive seen it happen a few times with other things. like redstone torches. and paintings. things thats should pop off when the base block is moved.
likely t is infact part of the diretional quirk of minecraft. where some device. and physics seem to be broken based on the direction they are facing.
even in the video they have multiple versions built facing many different directions. so that would be my first fix. now if that doesnt work.
try shifting the design so that instead of pushing the grass block long ways. it pushes short ways and replaces them with glass or another transparent block.
and as before mentioned this could also be a block update issue. possibly steming from the north south glitch. id add a few repeaters into the circuit so it moves slower. and possible have a circuit so it automatically sends 2 pulses so it shifts twice.
now i dont know which block isnt updating. the wheat or the dirt.
if it is the wheat. than placing any block above it, not just a light source. should help to register the block update.
hope something here helps man. but like nose job said. growing wheat. on iron blocks?.... now you sir... are a farmer. lol
