ok, i am having a very frustrating problem. i am trying to build a stable for my sheep but i have run into a few problems.
1) when i try to enter the pens through a gate, the sheep crowd the gate and often escape the pen.
2) to combat problem 1, i made pit/pens. pens that were 3 bocks deep with a fence around the top and a ladder down into the pen. the blasted sheep then started jumping over the fence into other pens or out of the stable completely it actualy appeared that they were using the ladders.
3) in the pit pens, other animals seem to spawn in the pens, some times wolves that kill my sheep.
what i need is a pen design that will allow me to enter the pen with out the sheep escaping or other animals spawning in the pens. this has been vexing me for some time now and i am finally frustrated enough to ask for ideas.,
Just build a regular pen with a fence gate. In front of the fence gate, build an "airlock," which is a smaller pen in front of the main pen with its own door. Open the airlock door, close it behind you, then open the pen door. If any sheep get out into the airlock, they can be corralled back in using wheat.
Don't make the fences 2-high. The reason for this is because even though mobs can't jump over fences, the game still reads a fence as one block high, so mob AI will try to path over it when it chooses a spot outside the pen to try to wander over to. If you build a 2-high fence wall but leave a 1-high fence gate at the entrance, the fence gate becomes the only 1-block high block for the sheep to try to path over, so they'll end up crowding the door ceaselessly. If all the fences are 1-high, they'll crowd around the walls equally.
I assume you live in either a forest or taiga....
The only way to prevent wolf spawn is to not build in those two biomes.
If you do, your sheep will eventually be killed of, regardless....

I think wolves can spawn in any biome, though rarely outside of the taiga and forest biomes. I know the wiki says otherwise, but I've encountered wolves in the middle of huge desserts many times before.
You can prevent spawning from ANY kind of mob by making the pen floor out of glass or some other transparent material. Baby animals will still spawn from breeding, but nothing spawns on transparent blocks naturally (except from spawners).

Maybe, but they probably wandered into it. I highly doubt those wolves I found in the ocean spawned there....
And the glass floor would kill the purpose of sheep regrowing their wool. ._.

Actually, my homestead is in a dessert. my barn actually crosses 3 biomes. dessert, plains, tundra. but a forest is nearby. (in this area, 4 different biome meet in about a 40 meter area. Dessert, forest, plains, tundra, one reason i chose that particular spot. the only thing i have to go any great distance for is Spruce trees, and that is only about 90 meters.)

If you're breeding sheep, they don't have to regrow their wool
One thing I looked in to while testing the passive mob cap limit, was at what point the game stops spawning passive mobs naturally. While I didn't extensively test this, for the most part the game quit spawning passive mobs on it's own at around 50 for sheep/cows/pigs and at around 8 for chickens. If you can get above that number in penned up animals it should help with your random critters spawning in your pens.
I put a breeding pair of animals each in small pen that is made using 5 fence rails x 5 fence rails. Each pen has a 1-block wooden walkway between them with the pen gates facing into the walkway. The outside of the compound of pens is double-fenced (2 wide, not 2 high) and the exits from the walkways are double gated so that I can open the outside gate, walk into the 1/2 block space between them, close the outside gate, and then open the inside gate.
The pathways and perimeter double gates ensure that any animals that might escape individual pens are still trapped within the compound. In my larger farm, I have also segmented the pathways such that animals that have escaped or respawned in the pathways are still unable to move 20 blocks in any direction so they won't despawn even if they have escaped. The 1-block space between the individual pens also prevents animals from respawning in other pens, so my sheep don't get mixed in with my cows whenever I save and exit and then re-enter the game anymore. The double perimeter fencing prevents wolves from attacking the sheep through the fences and the small size of each pen lessens the chances of wild animals (including wolves) from spawning inside the pen area. While still imperfect, this seems to be the most stable configuration I've come up with so far.

Ugh, the slowness. Save that for Superflat survival. ._.
