Haven't flooded a whole flat so I'm not sure in the nether seems to be 55 so it's gotta be in the 70's or 100 max that's just assumption. Not sure if villagers count on that... again I'm trying to flood a world to test this.. but as of TU11 they are supposed to increase mob cap limits so.. I might abandon the testing Idea.

I've gotten to 50 with some wild animals still appearing in some locations of the map. At first, I was only able to get to about 35 and thought that perhaps the limit was only in effect over a specific number of chunks of the map; however, I now believe that the animal limits apply to the entire map. It must be somewhat higher than 50; but it would be difficult to determine it exactly since one really doesn't know how many animals might be trapped on cliffs and in small caves and sinkholes where they can't move the 20 blocks required for them to despawn naturally. These wild, but trapped animals take up spaces in the animal cap limit; making the actually limit difficult to test.
Since the item frame/painting limit is definitely 200 for the entire world, I would suspect that it might be that the overall total hard cap on all mobs, including both passive and hostile mobs, villagers, squid, wolves, etc. is also 200, with certain somewhat flexible allocations of portions of that being made by the game depending on things like whether it is day or night, how many players are in the world and how far apart they are, etc.
As OverlookeDEnT stated, 4J have indicated that they will be increasing/adjusting the numerical limits in the game, so this may change significantly with the next update.
Ok, so my curiosity got the better of me and I set out to find out for myself.
Using a superflat world, structures off, on peaceful, I flooded the whole map except a 50x50 area where I fenced off some 5x5 pens.
Regardless of how many passive mobs there were, I could not get any more chickens to spawn than 16 using either seeds to breed with or throwing eggs. Using a spawner egg I was able to get 20.
Even after killing off all the chickens, I could not get more pigs/sheep/cows than 70 using wheat to breed with. Using a spawner egg I could get up to 90.
I haven't tested hostile mobs yet (it's getting late), perhaps another time.
