Started a new map today to do some different things. One thing is I would like to keep the crystals from the end. I don't make enderman farms and like to leave things looking the way they did so I want to kill the dragon without destroying the crystals then 'make' a block dragon.
Here are some ideas will any of them work?
1- have at least four players firing at the dragon to drain it's health faster than it can heal (lag would be a problam here)
2- cover the crystals with water or lava. the crystals are on fire so i think lava won't hurt them but water may put them out
3- build an obsidian box around them to prevent the healing rays from reaching the dragon
Any ideas?

I think that the crystals heal the dragon through blocks. As for the killing idea, you would need way more that four players to kill the dragon without taking down some of the healing crystals, it just would be too unreasonable. I've never tried the water and lava idea, I don't think it would work though.
Building barriers around the crystals do not prevent it from healing the dragon. I'm also not certain that including more players will help. There seems to be a moment of invulnerability that a mob has after taking damage where it won't take more. This is bad news, because even going into creative, getting a Sharpness IV diamond sword, and wailing on the Dragon while it's "protecting its egg" and hovering over the exit portal doesn't yield much net damage. Several players working together would have to work together perfectly in order to deal enough constant damage to kill the dragon without breaking the crystals.

The team is not doable in that case. The lag issues make coordinated long range attacks with 4 or more players unworkable; I think. Chunk loading is such an issue.
??? Another idea: What about a coordinated potion strike. When the dragon swoops down to protect the egg four players hit the dragon with poison potions and slowing potions then diamond swords. The host, me in this case, can continue the archery strikes since the host has the least lag.
Potions don't affect the dragon but if you need help with the brute force approach, add me and I'll be happy to help

Yea just logged back on to report my findings and you ninjad me
below done in creative on hard
1- water and lava no effect on crystals
2- potions no effect on dragon
3- encasing crystals in obsidian or ender stone no effect
4- destroying all but one crystal doesn't affect the health issue but the dragon stays closer to one area
5- pistons to push crystal. placing pistons within a couple of blocks of crystal and they dissappear. placing piston 8 blocks from crystal and trying to use ender stone to push crystal destroys it.
I know this community has some ideas on how to do this. Is brute force the only method? In survival on hard the only time you can really get some good hits in with a sword is when the dragon is in the middle low to the ground but even with multiple players that's not enough to kill it while it's being healed. Then once it flys away it gets far enough away that arrow hits are hard to get and it completely heals before it lands again.
There are 8 crystals. Maybe with 6 or 8 players with half stationed on the ground near the middle and the others on everyother tower with bow and arrow keeping up a constant barrage on the dragon.
EDIT: additional attempts: I placed a large ender stone box around the central area to catch the dragon. It did not impede his flight went through the blocks. Then placed a shower of water to try and damage him but no effect. Then tried lava with same results. It 'appeared' that when he would fly through the ceiling of the box that he would knock the source blocks of the lava and water off and they would be on the ground when he had gone.
I'm not sure things would react the same way in creative?

How does that sound?
Back, with an update!
Behold:
I wasn't sure about how well potions would work, but it did make me remember the strength potion.
So here's how I did it:
Creative mode, on peaceful.
Diamond sword with Sharpness IV
Strength II potion (the superbuffed one from the crafting menu that has both level II potency and extended time)
Swift II potion (same as above)
You have to move carefully when the dragon goes to hover over the exit portal. See, the attack pattern is for the dragon to swoop in there, stop, blow its acid breath two or three times, and then take off again. If you can push it away from its position directly over the portal long enough, it won't even start blowing its acid breath, and you have a longer period to sit and wail on it. Strength II and Sharpness IV combined allows you to rip through the Dragon's health fast enough.
It still takes a lot of patience, but once you get used to the dragon's pattern, as long as you keep your Strength II up, you can kill the dragon without breaking the crystals.
And I did it on my own, too

that makes a nice picture. I was hoping to do it all on hard survival but only now realized i didn't put that in the original post.
So you didn't have to use the bow at all with your technique? And you would strike the dragon while he was hovering near the middle and he didn't heal all the way up before he came back to the center?

The bow has less DPS than the sword, you wouldn't be able to solo the dragon w/crystals with one.
Yeah, you have to chase the dragon at full flying speed (tip: if you tilt your cursor down slightly below the dragon and then hold A as you sprint-fly forward, you fly even faster) and hit it as much as possible while it's flying around, because it WILL eventually break free from your "hold" in the center and start flying around. If you don't keep damaging it as much as possible between the protect-the-egg cycles, it'll heal up.
Fortunately, with the potion and the sword enchantment, you have a bit of a margin for error.
