For anyone wanting a more indepth look at the food issue here are 3 sources.
1- The first source is Ethos on utube. It's 35 minutes long but has good information. If you want to shorten watch time you can skip the first 11 minutes. I watched it all and will likely watch again in a few days to make sure I didn't miss something.
I used to eat just enough to refill my food bar, and mostly ate bread when I was 2 1/2 down (because I don't like getting *too* far below 9, in case I get injured unexpectedly). But since I've learned about saturation, I eat a lot more "wastefully"! I have lots of steak as a side effect of trying to get lots of leather (I use a lot of item frames to mark my storage chests, and needed lots of books to max out my enchantment bench's possible levels and still want more bookshelves for decoration), and a fair amount of chicken too as a side effect of gathering feathers for arrows. So I mostly chow down on those, these days!
