So do you eat efficiently? For example do you eat cooked beef if you are only down 2 food (cooked beef gives 4 food). I play hard survival and will eat efficiently if I'm in a safe place like working in the house or a tree farm but if mining or hunting or something I try to keep my food topped out. So it's sometimes yes sometimes no for me.
Are you a minecraft chef? I have made all the items in minecraft but only answered cooked meat, cakes and bread because those are the ones I use all the time. I really like the cakes near the nether portal and other set locations where i may be in danger.
I'm kind of the same. Only eat when there's enough hunger empty to use the food efficiently. Except when I'm fighting something and I need my health to regenerate, then I'll waste food to keep it topped off.
As far as what kind of food, just whatever is handy. The passive mobs annoy me enough that I tend to have plenty of steaks and pork chops to not need to go out of my way for food. And chickens too. They must always be hunted down and exterminated.
I always have at least 50 cooked steaks with me. When my hunger drops to four empty i eat one of the steaks. That way I always stay at full health for the random creeper that decides to blast off right next to me.
Well I try as much as I can even though that some food gives more saturation than others. It doesn't matter sometimes if you eat efficiently or not because even if you top off your hunger bar, chances are that you haven't capped of the saturation. So sometimes yes and sometimes no.
I just eat whatever's handy, pork, beef, raw chicken, rotten flesh, spider, bread, etc.
A breadman IRL... not so much in MC. Doesn't sustain you all that long. Same thing for mushrooms. Though it's too bad mushroom stews don't stack. Melon farming is something I've yet to try. So that leaves meat, which is my main. Steaks, steaks, and more steaks with an occasional porkchop. Definitely anti-vegan.

Yeah, I'm sorta like this. I could honestly care less about how many bars of hunger something refills. What I'm more interested in is the saturation. The more saturation, the less often I'll have to eat. Meat (esp cooked porkchops and steak) give the most saturation, so I tend to have those along with some cooked chicken and bread or sometimes even golden apples.

In my opinion, melon farming isn't even worth it. I mean, yea, you get bunches of melon slices from one, but it only fills one hunger bar and the saturation sucks.
OT: I keep my hunger bar full. Always. And unless I find bread/wheat in a chest, then I use cooked beef over anything else.
I tend to make and keep a golden apple on me always, but never really need to use it.

I tend to eat frequently to keep my health regenerating. I suck in battle and fall a lot, so keeping my hunger bar topped right up is essential for me to stay alive. I wouldn't say I'm inefficent though because I tend to eat copious amounts of watermelon, which only provides 1 meatpop anyway. I also eat a lot of bread, which provides only 2 meat pops. I like the watermelon because it's easy to grow and harvest. I have little watermelon patches set up all over my world, so I can easily grab a quick restock of food nomatter where I'm at.
Tip: Eating a golden apple if you're full (because you can still eat it even when you're full) can totally cap off your saturation rate and you don't have to eat for a really long time.
I eat almost 100% melon. I cant run out it seems. Half the time I dont even collect them till im completely out of whats on me. It was bread and steak till I got my melon seeds, but only because my house was beside a village. The new structure will be so far from a village it will 100% melon.
i mostly eat bread and melons. melons i can harvest 4 or 5 stacks by popping a couple levers.. bread i make with extra bonemeal while harvesting arrows from a skeleton experience grinder.
i've started eating a little chicken, as chickens are part of my arrow farm.
so, bread fills 2 and 3 hunger, alternating.. i think i get far fewer '2' returns and far more '3' returns if i eat a piece of melon first and between 2 bread pieces if i have low hunger. i've spent quite a bit of time watching this, but would be interested in independent testing, if people are eating those foods already.
i also eat rotten flesh a bit.. just cause i'm in a monster hole.. and sometimes you have to think like a mob to live with the mobs.

The hunger bar you see doesn't decline until the saturation bar is gone so the effect of a high saturation food will last longer.
Do you know of a numerical value to the saturation level of diffirent foods?
Look up ethos video on YouTube about food, it has the numerical values
