Is it possible to have a fortress without a portal? My fortress is split with a ravine so I was wondering since I cannot find one and we looked all night with no luck. When I look in creative with the same seed I can find it but it is not located at those coords in my original seed which is preupdate. Any Ideas?
I have a fair amount of time into this one so I was hoping there was a solution. the ender eye takes me to so far then goes up to the surface and sits there....
The other day I spent like 4 hours looking through a stronghold. Eventually started digging everywhere I could and found more and more parts that are hidden in areas that are covered. Keep looking bro.
PoeticWhisperer is right... keep looking. Until you find evidence of an actual broken portal, chances are it's there and you just haven't found it yet.
Try X-raying the area by having pistons push TNT into as you're pressed against a wall.
Strongholds can (and usually are to an extent) split into different areas...stupid caves and walls of splitingness.
As BloodyPhoenix mentioned, try the x-ray glitch. My stronghold was broken up by ravines and caves to the point of almost non-existence. Finally found the portal room (using the x-ray glitch) completely encased in stone surrounded by a lava lake.

You can do this with glowstone too if you are afraid of blowing yourself up. Portal frames are indestructible, so you can blow the fort up if you want to take a fun excavation approach.
Thanks everyone we had success last night with the xray approach with one person looking and the others being directed to look in certain areas. Cheers!!By the way it had a cobblestone staircase which kinda threw me off since everything else is the stone bricks...
