I think calling them "duckens" is the safest approach.
Chickens don't swim.
Ducks don't drop chicken meat.
Chickens don't have webbed feet and wide bills.
Ducks don't spawn from chicken spawn eggs.
There is no way to define them absolutely as one or the other. So they're duckens.
And on that note, what exactly can I do with hundreds of ducken eggs? *sigh* And I had to go build an egg farm, too, so I could get more. I originally did that so I could get feathers for arrow fletching, but my skeleton incinerator makes it so easy to get ready-made arrows from skeletons that I haven't bothered. But every time I go by, I have this compulsion to check on my duckens, and end up with another stack of eggs in consequence.
Note: really easy, if you're building your first farm: enclose a 2x7 area with walls at least 5 blocks high, put ladders on the second block from the floor, a water source on the third level, and an opening allowing access at floor level at one end. Add duckens. They float, eggs fall to the ground underneath, you walk in and pick up eggs, or meat/feathers if you kill duckens. You can also breed them from underneath. And, yes, you see them paddling around in ducklike fashion overhead. If you put stairs up the outside, you can easily catch wild duckens by luring them into the farm with a handful of seeds.
If this is refering to the in-game text which appears on the loading screen, how can we tell if it's refering to the birds at all? It could be refering to the creeper for all I know. Just because there are two options doesn't make either one the right answer. Maybe it's refering to the behaviour of the villagers...?
