I have spawned and died 30 times marking the spot each time to find the spawn area boundaries on my map. I want to build a welcome house/platform for new people joining the game. I play on hard survival. So if I build a house covering the spawn area are new people going to spawn on the roof since it's the highest point? Can I build the roof out of something that makes people spawn in the house. If not I think I'll do some sort of raise platform. Any thoughts about what I should keep in mind on this project?
yea a far as i know there is nothing that players cant spawn on. and you will always spawn on the highest block. im guessing this is done so people cant be forced to spawn below ground.
Yeah, the castle courtyard is a good way to do it, or a well-lit tower with trapdoor/ladder into the main area. Though...the game doesn't let anyone place lava near spawn, so nobody will insta-die...even when you want to build a trap.
Just a tip. If you use a bucket of lava you can mark the four corners of your spawn area quite easily. The game gives you a pop up notification when you try to place lava in the spawn area - it is forbidden. You can use that pop up to find the four corners. Find the distance between two corners and it'll be the same all the way around.

Yeah, you can funnel them to their death... Anyways the player will spawn within a 20x20 area of the origin (which can be found with a compass) and at the highest point on top of ANYTHING. Just find the origin and build 11 blocks (just to make sure) in each direction.
Build a building on your spawn point, short building, with a wall around the ceiling. make a staircase down into a room, with several rooms and chests filled with stone (or iron, depending on how far along that world is.) tools, some food, some torches, and maybe a stack of wood.

I often desire to make a welcome/containment building at the spawn, but by the time that I have the material, I forget exactly where it is! This will be a wonderful method for finding the spawn area again. Question, will lava flow into the spawn area like normal, or will it "wall" up there? Might be a great method of containment!
in a future update They might change it so when you set the world spawn, it will be the exact coordinates, There is a bug report, and they assigned someone to it.
Lava will continue to flow into the spawn area. The actual spawn box is smaller than the box created by lava buckets to allow for lava flow on a flat surface but you can create a lava funnel of death. As shown in the video above you can use a dispenser to place source blocks of lava in the spawn. The pic shows lava source block outside of spawn with lava flowing into the middle of the spawn area in the seed Golden Apple. Link to Golden Apple in classic size (xbox360 size) with 5 villages.

You could also build a small starter castle. Have them spawn inside the castle walls within a courtyard.
