We started a new world as of TU9, to film beginning to end for the ender dragon for youtube.
We put a halt to everything because of the lighting issue, and the terrible footage we were getting from it. We returned to the server today to find the lighting issue fixed. Motivated we kept mining, gathered obsidian for a portal. I placed the portal (I am not the host). We have all played this server together, as to make sure everything is on footage. Everyone was within 30 blocks of each other almost all the time.
I stepped into the nether portal, only to be dropped to my death into lava. Lost a lot of stuff. Frustrated, the host offered to try, he found the same result, 'tried to swim in lava'. We re-loaded and reset the nether and found ourselves on a corner island, looking off in the distance, we saw another nether portal. We never placed one nor did we even have the materials to place one before the existing one by our base camp. We went in survival and explored. Found no nether fortress, and all of the chunks are rather small, and I couldn't ever see a fortress being inside of them.
If this isn't strange enough we left the nether in the newly found portal, which generated a new portal in literally the middle of nowhere. No structures nearby, infact it was in the middle of a pretty dense forest. We thought this was absolutely crazy, and we are boggled, so we exited to before save where we were just about to enter the portal, and reset the nether. Same exact nether, but off in the distance a few blocks away each were 2 separate portals we never created, placed differently than the one we found the first time.
What is going on?!?!?!

Sounds like Herobrine a really curious glitch to me.
I've had some problems like this before, but nowhere like burning to death.
I went in one and back out and bam, random half-explored cave....

sounds like someone or something happened to your original portal..
That happened to me once, actually. It was a LONG time ago, like, before we could manually change our skins, so sorry if I don't remember is exactly. I went to the nether, not as the host, and the host did something to the portal, i think..blocked it, and i spawned nearby, like within 30 blocks.
that or a ghast blew it up, and i relit it, and it spawned me elsewhere with a new portal anyway, but i doubt that.
Maybe someone sneaked off and made their own portal? didn't own up to it?

Retired Staff...
Yeah, always have. Never enter the Nether without Flint and Steel. Makes getting back a whole lot easier. lol
Today I was entering when a creeper blew behind me. Went back out and found a second portal beside the original. Free obsidian.
