you'd be surprised at the amount of detail is in some of the skins... i know to get the red/blue Spartan to look right as pixel art you need a minimum of 16x16 for the head alone, and that's cutting it down to max pixel-a-tion... a 64x64 would probably be best to get all the details correct TBH.
Oh, I agree that you can get a surprising resemblence.. to the human eye. I don't think image recognition software would recognize a Minecraft model Spartan as being the same as an HD Halo 4 model Spartan, for instance.
