Because I tend to use a LOT of glass, or stone, I have a huge number of furnaces. I normally use up to 9 at a time, depending on what I'm doing. On my main world, which was started before enchanting, I have two banks of 14 furnaces, that I only use char/coal in. If I don't have a number of items divisible by 8 in my stack, I use wooden planks to cook them, because I hate being wasteful when cooking things.
It's nice having saplings for a food only furnace where you may get a single pig or chicken that spawned near you while your doing something else. Cooking meat is always efficient with saplings since it takes 2 saplings for each item. I get a lot of saplings from a tree farm
That's a good idea. I may start doing that. I haven't started a tree farm yet, I'm still clearing trees out of the dense forest I've built on. But it will be on my list of things to do so that I can build up my stash of wood/planks/sticks
