Wondering about peoples furnace habits. I have 6 furnaces currently. 3 in one abandoned mine shaft 1 in another one and 2 in my main house/village. The two in the house are run almost constantly when I'm in the area.
I use wood, coal and saplings for the furnace. I have used all types and mostly (80% of the time) I use coal.
I do not burn efficiently. I have started saving raw meat from hunting trips until i get more than 8 for coal but then just put the whole stack in there.
I tried using the furnace as a decorative block but didn't like accidentaly 'clicking' the furnace open.
I'm wasteful, have too many furnaces... and burn only coal and rods.... Unless it was in a skyblock had to make charcoal and I felt bad for burning wood with wood... seemed contradicting.. like a starburst commercial..

20 in my storage room but I normally use 4 in there. There's 5 levels with 4 furnaces in each one
1 in my house
8 in my factory or farms in total
3 in my nether base
3 in my custom made village
20+ in my Atlantis or under water city
I use coal in the over world and blaze rods in the nether.
I'll only use saplings just to get rid of them. They pile up fast if you are cutting alot of trees. And you always get more than you need to replant.
It's nice having saplings for a food only furnace where you may get a single pig or chicken that spawned near you while your doing something else. Cooking meat is always efficient with saplings since it takes 2 saplings for each item. I get a lot of saplings from a tree farm
Question: "What type of fuel do you use? (items smelted per unit of fuel used for next question)" is set to check boxes not radio buttons (thus allowing more than one selection).
Selecting more than one choice via the check boxes however fails and only the first choice is accepted as an answer. The other selections are silently ignored.

I was able to multi-vote and I went back and double checked the settings on the poll. If people have issues voting maybe a moderator could do something because it looks OK to me.
Question 1: All of the above (depends on the specific map and what stage I'm at)
Question 2: I have used all of them, plus leftover building materials (e.g. fences) when I don't want to store them.
Question 3: I try to use each fuel as efficiently as I can; so the number if items I have to smelt will, in part, determine what fuel I select. E.g. If my amount is divisible by 8, then I'll use coal, if it's divisible by 3, then I'll use something that smelts 1.5 items. If it's divisible by 12, then I'll use blaze rods (depending on what I have lots of on hand as well).
Question 4: Yes, I often use furnaces as stoves to complete kitchen interiors or as wood stoves to complete rustic cabin interiors. These settings are seldom actually used by anyone, so the interiors are really just for looks.

Normally I use coal but when I have a blaze exp farm, I have more blaze rods than I would ever need so I start using them for cooking since they are the better of all (not counting lava because 1 bucket of lava is equivalent to 8-9 blaze rods and lava buckets dont stack)
I usually have 15+ furnaces to cook quickly and efficiently. (I like to have furnace rooms like Etho)
I tend to keep between 8-12 furnaces on my survival maps, but i voted for the 5-10 option, because it's rare that i go over 8 on a map.
I use (char)coal in my furnaces. (i use coal after i go caving and get over a stack, but for the first night or two in MC, i always make 32 charcoal for torches and furnace needs, until i get my coal deposit going.)
And you could say i'm OCD about how i smelt my ores, if i have 7 or less, i pack them away in my chest, and only smelt in multiples of 8. If i have a stack of ores that do not divide by 8, i remove ores from the stack until it does, then i store the extras. After smelting ores, i always replace the coal i used, keeping my furnaces at a full stack of coal.
I've never built using just furnaces, but if/when decorating a map in creative i do add a furnace in each house, and usually 4-8 in the taverns i build (number depends on how long i make the bar).
I have 18 furnaces built into the floor of my storage room.. Have a checkered pattern with furnaces and cobblestone that looks pretty good. Only use blaze rods for fuel since setting up a blaze farm. Since blaze rods cook 12 items, I usually throw in 60 items at a time, so none is wasted
My current world has 8 furnaces in it, which at any time could be running constantly. I don't normally have enough coal to keep them running constantly so I keep a tree farm running for the charcoal. Which means I get a lot of saplings which I also use for fuel.
I've had a couple ideas for using furnaces as decorative items, just haven't implemented them in any of my builds yet.
I had never really thought about using charcoal in a furnace. I always use it to make torches but if I'm going to burn wood anyway it looks like it would be worth the time to cook the wood first.
edit: Also it seems like I can still get the maximum efficientcy with different items if I put the next item in before the flame goes out in the furmace. So, for example, with one piece of coal I can cook 2 chickens, 3 pork and 3 beef. Is that correct also or am I missing something here.

I find I usually lose out on an item or two when putting multiples in, so I might get the 2 chickens, 3 pork, and only1 of the beef out of 1 lump of coal... just not quite quick enough or coordinated enough on the controls to get the maximums i guess. In the reverse, though, I have no trouble with losses. So if I have, say 2 oak saplings and 4 fir ones, I can smelt 3 pork without a break in the process.

I also tend to use them as decoration--A Furnace wall is disturbingly intimidating in darkness.
Stay fluffy~

2. I use coal or charcoal. Old world I was not able to find my nether fortress.
3. Depends on what im using but usually yeah
4. Nope
