Im working on a PvP map and im trying to figure out the spawn area. does the area consist of four chunks or does it have nothing to do with chunks? Also, when a new player spawns in, will they still spawn on the highest platform in the spawn zone? thanks for the help
Yes, they will spawn on the highest surface in the spawn area. The spawning zone is 20 x 20, if I remember correctly. The best way to find the precise area is with 2 controllers, or with a friend. Have the guinea pig (player to be killed repeatedly) place a block on the ground in each space he/she spawns in. Eventually a square should start to form. Once you have all four sides of the perimeter marked, there is no need to continue. Just throw a border around the area and do with it what you wish.
The spawn area is an area of 20x20 blocks, and yes, if there is a building/platform within the spawn area, players will spawn on top of it.
The best way to determine the area in my opinion is to plug in a second controller, and kill the second player over and over until you determine the square's furthest points.
The best way to test for the spawn area limits without having to kill someone over and over is to remember the protected area is 33x33 (IIRC) centered on the spawn point, and of course inside that is the 20x20 area of actual spawnage. So one can use the lava pour prevention to size out the area and figure out the center very fast.
The best way to find the exact borders of the spawn zone, without fail, is to place lava in the area until it will let you. Remember you are not allowed to place lava anywhere inside the spawn area, thus if it lets you place lava, that is outside the spawn area. And then likewise, if it does not allow you to place the lava then that is your spawn area.
The way I do it, is once in the rough spawn zone, i will repeatedly try and place a lava, and then continue moving forward until it lets me, then I know that is the border, so I place a block, then work on another direction...you can fill in the rest from there...I hope.
20x20...whut?
All the spawn areas I have are 35x35....
I just place lava around until it actually places and I don't receive the warning--that's when I know where the spawn line is.
Do that until you've found the entire area.
As for where they spawn, it's usually the highest place, but I have spawned under leaves before....

Now you made me go look it up. 20x20 is the spawn area centered around the world's spawn point. 33x33 is the protected area centered around the world's spawn point. Just as I recalled.

DieHardKiller and you, both gave a more detailed description of how to use the lava pour prevention for the protected area and thus spawn area..
