But the latest evidence: for the life of me I CANNOT get a repeating circuit to work.
This is what I want: I wanna set up an automated melon farm. I've already built the water delivery sluice, planted the seeds, and set up the pistons over where the melons will grow. When a melon pops into being, I trigger it and get a nice influx of fruit.
But I dont WANT to have to press the button. So I set up a bunch of repeaters set to 3, in a row. Finally I got it so that it takes about 10-20 seconds to fire. Splendid.
But here's the thing. I can't figure out how to get the thing to REPEAT. I turn on the power (with an inverter), and it flows just fine, but will not turn off.
I need some schooling on how to get a power source to delay and repeat every minute or so.... more importantly, to turn OFF after it pulses. Any tips?
Do melons forming trigger a BUD switch? I know grass and wheat growing will. If so, a BUD is absolutely your best option; using a clock in this case would either take such a huge repeator as to create tons of redstone lag or would have the harvestor pistons firing more frequently than necessary (like an in-efficient cobblestone generator).
Anyway - Baldur's suggestion is probably easiest- with judicial use of booster tracks and track length, you can get the exact timing you need.
Yes a BUD switch is what you need. (Block Update Detector). Only problem is that it would detect the growth of 1 melon not when they are all ready.. so It'll be hit and miss. Beyond setting some really long clock, that's the only thing that I can think will work for ya.

I would be an in-efficient use of space, but if you set up your melon farm such that there was one open blck in between where each melon will form, you could then use a single independent BUD for each
A BUD switch is a redstone contraption that makes use of a bug in pistons. Pistons can receive a signal from the empty block above them; this makes it possible to setup a circuit that is inherently unstable (i.e. a circuit that should be both on and off at the same time because it feeds back into itself). The piston then becomes the "sensor" that flips the circuit from "on but should be off" to "off but shoudl be no" and back again. Any block update that happens within one block of a piston causes the piston to "sense" the current state of the circuit and to realize "hey, I should be in the opposite state (i.e. if extended, retract, and vice versa) right now" which it then excutes. However, this execution reverses the state of the circuit, so the next time an update occurs next the piston it does the opposite of what it just did.

Um, just use a pressure plate that is in the doorway. When you approach your melons, they will harvest. Problem solved. Your welcome.

what is dumber than a moron? that would be me because this is the ONLY suggestion i understand. i am still new to MC and dont understand a lot about redstone contraptions.

Oh, I could get myself in so much trouble....
Anyway, don't feel bad. The truth is you can go through Minecraft building phantastic stuff and generally enjoying the heck out of yourself and never touch redstone. It's the beauty of the game - make it what you want.
I feel like there are probably three levels of redstone use. I'm not certain whether they are truly ordinal (one level might be conceptually orthagonal to the other two.
Conceptual redstoner: People like Nosejob - these guys build working computers out of redstone. They enjoy redstone because it gets at the most basic aspects of computation logic.
Contraption builders: people like Ethos - these guys build big, complex redstone machines that "do something" to make life easier in the game itself. The entry tier in this level is building things automatic farms and such, the draw is the same as the industrial revolution - better life through science!
Redstone Users: the modal category - these guys wire up simple circuit to do things like open a doors, turn on lights, etc. They aren't really focused on "making things;" rather they just have some redstone dust and like to play with it.
(As an aside, I'm probably just an entry level contraption builder - I can wire up a BUD switch based hidden door or a clock based duck hunter game - but I really don't innovate much in my designs).
the thing is - reading the wiki can easily take you to the contraption builder level.
thanks for the info. i looked at the wiki and it seems interesting. my problem is i am using the internet explorer appp for the xbox and it really sux. cant even watch vidieos posted in these forums. i am just now starting to build a wheat farm and planned to use a lever connected by redstone to a series of simple pistons that operate sand blocks that hold water in a resevour. not the most complicated of constructs, but about the best i can do since i am unable to watch tutorial vidieos.
I use 2 Redstone Repeaters to make my clocks. I'm apparently a moron as well because I'm 22 and I had to have my 11 year old brother show me how to make the Redstone Repeater Clock lol.
I have been thinking about your problem Evil and I have a few questions.
Item limit related:
How many melons are you planting?
Are there any other types of plants your going to be harvesting this way?
If so which ones and how many of each?
Do you have any other fully auto farms like egg farms or mob farms?
Redstone related:
Do you have any experience with piston logic?
Do you have any experience with logic gates?
Whats the most advanced redstone circuit you've built so far?
I have built a fully auto farm (albeit useless because of the item sprite limit ><) that was set to harvest at predetermined intervals with no user input. The idea was I would pass by it on my way in or out of my treasure room, and be able to just grab up a bunch of waiting goodies. I ended up just setting each plant up to a manual switch. Anyway I'm willing to show you what you need to know to build your farm, I'll be on soon, just hit me up.

It could work just fine actually. Pistons can still be a BUD, despite other adjacent pistons. You would just have to design it yourself, then turn it into a BUD switch.
OP: If you want, feel free to add me on Xbox LIVE; BaronxofxDeath. I would just post some screenshots, but it would help to see your farm setup first. If you would rather just post some images of it, that's fine too. If you do add me, please send a message so I know you're not just some random person.
this is bad. i cant even get a simple lever / piston farm to work. thee water comes out of the resevour then just stops 2 blocks on the farm. does any one have any links to farm build diagrams that are not video? with pictures would be great.

Well, I think I am a contraption builder (thanks to Etho I learned some advanced stuff) but I am not that good with Redstone to build things like Wilson (If you dont know who Wilson is just check out Etho`s LP and in episode 248 they talk about what Wilson will do and in episode 265 you can see most of the wiring done)

What I meant was I don't want to trigger anything. I want this to be a self-contained continuous process.
