No you will not, it is considered 7/8 thick by players, but looks like a single high block, kind of like a fence.
Was playing with my kids in splitscreen the other day and finally saw how this actually "works."
You really have to hand it to Notch and the creative brains that have made this game. I love it when "world logic" hangs together and soul sand is a great example.
So, soul sand makes you walk slower and counts as 7/8 height of a regular block but "looks like a normal block." The reason? You sink into it. I noticed my son's avatar actually sink into the sand (about half the thickness of the feet of his skin).
if you put soulsand in a tundra area and poor one block of water over it like an ice pond it is even better because now your even slower to mover then walking across exposed soulsand and you can build a better trap

you just cant run through it.
it even makes great soul sand traps
Putting Ice under Soul Sand actually makes the player move the slowest in Minecraft. Espeically if you throw in some cobwebs. But just per blcoks, Ice under Soul Sand makes the player move slower than anything else in the game.
I like that idea! I've built a make-shift wall surrounding our base, and collecting Soul Sand for a add-on project does sound fun.
Creating something that slows mobs and then allows them to be attacked is a great defense. I once built a hallway where the floor gets moved to reveal Soul Sand. Once the mobs fall into it, they're pelted by arrows from dispensers.

That's an interesting build...
Honestly, haven't been into the Nether all that much. Mostly due to time restraints and well... the Nether Crash Bug.
I guess while the main goal for my cousin and I right now is the Ender Dragon, collecting resources like Soul Sand will be done on the side. If all goes well, I may get back to building things like I use to.

off topic, i recomend you go to the nether, so you can get potions to help you in your fight
on topic, a bridge that collapses, revealing a pit with soulsand and ice, underneath, with cobwebs littered on top...sounds fun

Yup. It's slightly smaller.
Soul Sand is indeed considered a Smaller Block. According to the Minecraft Wiki, Soul Sand is 7/8 of a Block.

Oh no don't hate one of my favorite blocks. I'm currently strip mining the nether of all the soul sand so I can build a temple/pyramid in the desert.
Then don't walk in it -.-

Would make for a great front gate, if you had something to get over mobs couldn't use
