i dont use lave in the furnace. waste of iron. 8 pieces of coal will cook a full stack of any material that can be smelted. and coal seems to be plentiful and easily mined. better to use lava to get obsidian and save your iron for tools.

Vs. 3 pieces of Iron Ore you'd lose for the bucket, which does just shy of 2 stacks. So I see it as 16 coal (well, more like 12) vs. 3 iron.
All depends on which you have more of at the moment, IMHO.

well. on my current build i have a grand total of 43 iron and 10 stacks of coal. and this has been about par for the course on every seed i have played.
Also, blaze rods are awesome. Just make a mob grinder and you're good xD
...But it takes akes a lot of time just to wait there for blazes though... Going AFK (or AFC, wtvr it is) near it is alright. By the way, if you don't mind me asking, how efficient are rods compared to coal?

Not surprising. Coal is naturally more abundant (it spawns in much bigger chunks) AND it can give multiple drops with a Fortune enchantment. Iron ore always needs to be smelted and thus cannot be Fortuned up.

Blaze rods smelt 12 items Vs 8 with coal/charcoal
