I think the small ones make the walking sound on whatever block they're on, and the larger ones (big ones, not sure about medium sized ones) make the slapping noise.

Only medium or large size Slimes will generate sound when they jump.

Mine personally make the correct noise. Sounds like some kind of audio glitch : /
Friend of mine was talking about the grass audio was ending short for him. Not sure what exactly this means or if its related.
