They are useful to get over water quickly.
You can also place them straight ontop of water.
I would only say its worth adding them via creative if you have already used creative otherwise no.
And I didn't think that they grow so probably not if others say the same.

I put my shirt on one leg at a time, just like everybody else.
actually, they do grow. i hate the things and cleared the swamp by my house of them and about 4 game days later my swamp had twice as many as i had cleared. i finally decided i had to move my house out of the swamp or start a new seed, the new seed is kick ass,

Lily pads are useless, so it isn't worth going in to creative mode for that, and not being able to get all of the achievements which would suck. If you have no jungle biome on your map, no lily pads!
Lily pads are very useful. I play hard survival and gather pads to use in my farms and for quick easy bridges that hostile mobs always fall off of. I place lily pads on the water in all my farms for wheat, sugar cane, pumkin, and mellons. the pads prevent items from dropping into the water when harvesting and create a bridge over the water. Makes harvesting much easier.
I use boats extensively so I have to clear paths through the pads anyway for hassle free boating. So I have plenty of pads for constructive purposes.
