OK so iv been hearing a lot about the lighting glitch.. no this is not a rant about how much it ruins the game or even a post telling everyone it exists. to be honest it doesn't even bother me.
but since its seems to affecting some peoples worlds very drastically and causing them issue i decided to investigate. turns out forcing the glitch is very difficult. it seems very random. but just now it finally happened on my world. and so i decided to experiment. and it seems lighting one of the blocks on fire, doesn't seem to matter which one, will reset the lighting... so far Ive only used fire charges but the principals the same with flint and steel, but for the sake of those playing survival ill look into it anyways just to be thorough.
my hypothesis is that its not the lighting value that's glitched or the air blocks, but instead on of the lower blocks is glitched and holding the lighting value of blocks recently mined. so adding a torch will only change the value of the air block but the blocks themselves are what needs to be "reset". Ive seen evidence to back this theory since when you continue to mine the dark areas after destroying a certain block, also seems random the light values will change.
this could be completely wrong of course. but so far this method seems to work. sorry for those experiencing this in wood houses. possible if u start the fire and put it out quickly it could still work to fix your lighting and not burn your house down as well. in any case yelling. the roof. the roof. the roof is on fire. we don't need no water. let the mother burn. will make it better.
At first I wrote this lighting bug off as inconsequential. As I saw little to no detriment during my building, but as it turns out, it does ruin gameplay. Particularly for those who are early in, and or mining. While you’re building, harvesting, or anything other than deep mining, you won’t be affected much, if at all but once you go underground and begin knocking away the rock it becomes clear just how big of a bug this is.
In some instances you can mine thousands of blocks without a problem, and in others you literally can’t mine a single one without revealing pitch black behind every block you break. Forcing you to place a torch or glowstone, and even that doesn’t always work. Sometimes it takes a dozen torches placed and knocked out nearby to get the light levels to flicker back on, and sometimes, rarely. Nothing but exiting the game will correct it.
1) Turn up gamma really high [helps for darkness and not having to make everything super bright. Also helps when lighting glitch happens and you can still see something]
2) Use torches sparingly
3) When see lighting glitch, either:
a) If already bright, block lava or break your torch [easier if you only have one near one]. Replace
b-) If not bright, place torch, and do a)
That works all the time for me. Hope that helps xD Can't theorize WHY it should work [4J most likely knows why already] but it works.
I see this glitch all the time, always in areas near lava pools, and sometimes involving other light sources. Game is not unplayable with this glitch, just highly annoying. Added to some of the other glitches, can seriously lag or crash the game as well.
not just my world, all my friends too. rarely happens to the host. one of my friends even was like "dang, so thats what you guys have been complaining about" after he joined one of my worlds
its a glitch that causes areas that should be lit or semi lit. usually recently mined areas. to be pitch black. and i mean pitch my gammas maxed and they are slid black areas almost

the problem is you cant light the areas usually. they aren't affected by normal lighting situations. i put a torch in one and destroyed it and it didn't do anything. as others have said the torch method doesn't always work. but the method Ive been using seems to work quite well. and it resets the lighting to the proper levels so no additional lighting is necessary after the fire has been put out. seems easier to me to just light a block on fire then put it out quickly... and people shouldn't be too concerned for their structures i did this in my ice sphere and quickly put a block over the fire. it reset the lighting and didn't do any damage to the sphere. but either way whatever method works best for you. im sure 4j will fix it soon enough but until then having ways to deal with it is necessary

It is a great method, but requires some finesse to execute in creative, since you have auto block breaking ability....
Thanks for the workaround, I'll try it out.
I played with a friend yesterday in his world, and I had this glitch on me all the time, it's really annoying.
I just hope they fix it within the next update.
I just spam place and break torches until it goes away. I did notice that sometimes it is caused by placing a torch and mining a block for some reason. Breaking whatever torch is affecting those blocks always fixes it for me.

Obviously it's not an air block, as those don't technically exist. That's just an abstraction, probably brought about with mods like MCEdit. After all, "Air Block" sounds better than "Not-a-Block Block" or "Block of Nothingness". At the end of the day, that space is just the lack of a block. Still, nice job on finding the fix, though I'm not sure why it would work any better than a torch. Either way, you're still updating the block in question and increasing the light level. Perhaps it is the fact that a "Fire Block" emits a higher light level? I do still agree that this bug seems more specific to textures as opposed to the lighting mechanics themselves. I'm just curious as to how this all happened in the first place.

This is usually where I see the glitch happen most often as well. Some times I can fix it with a torch, but every time it does happen I can just mine right through it. I don't think I have ever had a area blacked out that was more than 10-15 blocks long. But I will give the lighting a block on fire idea a try.

yea i was gonna put air blocks in quotations. since its not an actual block but still has a value in some way within the game. it has to be calculated or held in some way so that the game knows to allow light in or even allow people to see what was once covered by a block.

More technicalities, yay! The block ID is 0, sort of a place marker I would assume the program keeps track of, and a space reverts to when when told no other block should be there. The point is it can't be created, per se, it is just there instantly when a block ID is erased. Kind of similar to energy. You can't create coldness, it automatically happens as heat diminishes.

Then go back.
Glitch gone.
I litterally didnt see it in my own world until me and a friend went cave delving. it happened on one vein, once.
but as a client, it happens to every block that isnt on the surface.

I need ta write something better...
Not true at all. I host a world all the time when I'm on. It happens more often than not. You can't base that "statistic" on your own world.
