Hiya there, finally got my slimes for making both awesome and cliche redstone stuff, but the first thing I did was make a simple mob trap
1) Make quite small building with 4x4 floor and two height of air
2) Make redstone and pistons do magic to remove floor and reveal hole
3) Hole falls down ~20 blocks to where I'm waiting to finish off the mob
The entire contraption works pretty well; I moved the lever to right next to the hole and waited. The pistons in the way moved and I could see right up to the ceiling of the small enclosure. I made sure to remove surrounding torches and block off the surrounding area to douse the light filtering through the blocks, so the room is for sure dark.
So far, tested on Easy. Don't know if I should move along to a higher difficulty, light up surrounding areas [which I thought I did]/kill other mobs, increase the dark area's room [which makes it unsure if all the mobs would fall], or what... Sorry if one of these suggestions is appropriate, don't know which one to do >.< I simply want to make it easy enough to simply flip the lever, finish off mobs, flip lever, wait a tiny bit for respawning, and repeat.
[btw, this is underground at the top of a stronghold, which may have several dark rooms. Should I rebuilt the contraption at the surface so a) easy to kill monsters and works quite easily and efficiently in daytime?]

Yup same problem as your slime issue.. Light up more caves.. also for mobs to spawn you need to be at least 25 blocks away for them to spawn in the darkness... IF you want I can show you my gravity grinder set up.. But yeah light more mobs make area bigger... way bigger. 4X4 won't cut it.
Hmm... I wonder if I should make the mob grinder above the surface so that during the day time, the monsters will practically spawn in the room all the time. That way, I don't need to light up everything and go look for secret passages again xD
Grinders at this version aren't easy. 4x4 is way too small. I used to use a 144x144 area, but that was in an older version. I believe, if the 360 version is the same as the PC version at the same point, that now mobs won't move if you are far away from them. I'm sure someone will come along and refute or uphold this. I would try maybe a 32x32 grinder. Small enough for them to move, but big enough to spawn a few mobs.
Go to you tube and search "JL2579 advanced tutorial", it's the one that goes for 49 minutes. There is alot wrong with your mob grinder including size, position, surrounding light levels ect. If you take the time to watch this video ( which most people don't mind you), you will know more about mob grinders than 99% of minecrafters out there. That's a promise.

I'm sad now ='( Tried to make a very simple grinder without using others' ideas but guess I better look it up on Youtube. xD
Thanks for helpin out. Guess I'd better make a legit, bigger mob grinder with water, large flat dark land, etc and a collection point.
I would recommend to have it higher up and above an Ocean if possible.. Good luck!
And you don't have to watch some convoluted 50min video.. It's simple just have a large dark area to spawn and water to lead them into a hole that's it...
2 things. water is your best friend, and signs are his wife.
mind you, if you use water, your unlikely to get endermen.
That's what Enderman Farms are for .. But even though my grinder involves water the landing pad is within 32 blocks of the grinder so they are able to teleport and it is 3 high so I get the occasional enderman.

No offense, but that kind of advice is only going to waste his time. When you have built a mob grinder that pushes out over 75,000 items per hour, then come back and give advice.
Having a large dark area to spawn is useless if other parameters have not been met. You see, 99% of minecrafters think that a large dark space is what makes mobs spawn, however 1% understand that it has nothing to do with the dark space and everything to do with the amount of available air blocks around the dark space. If you would take some time to watch the "convoluted" video mentioned, you would understand that.
Actually, blaze farms are probably the way to go for me first. Doesn't need to be anything fancy- already got the surrounding area filled. Just need kill room with glass [so they can't hurt me] and more space for stacking them.
And thank you to everybody so far
