you can find obsidian in them? dang, thats news to me. get lucky, you can make an enchanting table right off the bat!

I don't know about rare, I created a random map and have two villages by spawn each has a blacksmith shop. One has a ravine running through the village with the blacksmith shop sitting in the middle of the ravine.

Yes blacksmith shops now have chests with loot. Mine two gave obsidian, redstone and I think it was iron boots in one. Iron and stone pickaxes, Iron bars and leather and an iron chest plate in the other.
Not sure yet, the few seeds I had blacksmith shops on for TU8 all have Wells where those villages were located if I use the seed on TU9. I'll report once I find a seed I like for TU9/10.

However, like terrain, the chests will not spawn into a world created before the update if the village was "explored."
best i found thusfar was (from 3 different chests in a single world) 10 gunpowder, 13 obsidian, 6 diamonds, 2 full sets of iron armor, 5 loaves of bread, and i think 5 iron ingots... not bad i think... too bad it was on a creative seed hunt, and that seed had horrible terrain... the chests almost made me consider using it tho... almost. before anyone asks, no i did not save the seed, sorry.
my seed has 7 villiages with 5 forges and 4 libraries. i have only checked 3 forges so far and have found 17 obsidian, 9 gold ingots, 12 iron ingots, 4 iron boots, 2 iron leggins, 1 iron chest plate, 6 diamonds, 3 saddles, 2 iron picks, and 5 redstone. i hope to check the other 2 forges today if i can elude the creepers long enough to get to them.
EDIT:
make that 6 villiages and 4.5 forges. with TU9 1 of my villiages disappeared completly and one got moved closer to the edge of the map, cutting the forge in half. sadly the half that is now missing is the half that would have the chest.

My bad I had explored the entire map but had not looked in every building. Everything looked normal so I was busy doing other things. Just went back to a close by village and found one of those chest. It had 2 bread, 4 obsidian, 3 iron and 5 apples. I already have a portal and enchantment table and stuff like that but if I had looked closer at the begining that would have been an awesome boost at the start of the map.
but know, I've found some good stuff in blacksmiths.

On survival, day one, found a blacksmith, and got 2 iron pickaxes and an iron sword

Thanks for the info. i did start this random seed just after i downloaded the latest update.
