I have a survival world i have been running for many months now (i've never switched to creative)and i made a coliseum recently. Now with the new update there are spawn eggs and i wanted to hook up a redstone machine to dispense them. This would require creative mode.
Would copying the survival save over to a usb (So the same save is on hardrive and usb now) work? As in overwriting the usb save to creative and keeping the survival save on the hardrive and take different paths on them. If i were to stay on creative for the usb and never move/copy it back to hardrive would it say started in creative for my survival on my hardrive?

Just on Pause Menu go to change storage device.. set it to your USB.. and save.. then you can do as you please with that one... and keep your main survival on... let's say the main drive.
