I had a idea of some sort that involved currency (like using "butter bars" and gold nuggets as some sort of value induced money" yet no one really wanted to join/interact in that sort of thing. Also I do love modern builds so I thought that it would work hand in hand very well, but as stated earlier or actually seen, no one really puts enough effort into it since they rather Have than Earn. You sort of have a better chance of an economy in a game with the new Sim City game. lol
I think it would work better once we have trading, because with emeralds...They have only 3 uses on the pc. trading (dur) decoration, and beacons. when we get them, im betting we'll only have the first two.
They'll be able to go to villagers, and get emeralds. and trade them with people for stuff villagers don't sell, or aren't currently selling
I find it funny how the players reacted to having to get resources on their own or pay for them. I joined a friend's world where they have a small community going on and my friend (who was the only one on it with me at the time) said that if I wanted to sleep in a bed that was already there, I would have to pay in iron (which seems to be the main currency, though they use more of a bartering system). Since I didn't have iron yet, I went and killed sheep to make my own bed. There was also a limit to how much area your house could take up within the community (though you could build it as high as you wanted), and in reaction I built my house outside of the community.
The downside to this is I do not feel very connected to the others who play on that world (though they're my friend's friends and I don't know them very well, so I can't say it would be different if I lived in the community). Though the next time I go on there I may just make a house in there, mainly because I feel like I could design a decent-looking house with the requirements.
There are a few community things, like the Nether portal, Enchantment table, and brewing stand, but mainly everyone has their own stuff and you have to trade if you want something from someone else. However, in cases where it is needed, players will share things with other players (like when we went to the End, my friend died and lost a lot of arrows, so we shared some with him).
There are no monopolies on anything (that I know of, but I highly doubt there are), and there's been only one instance of a theft, and my friend wasn't mad, and offered to replace the diamond himself, but he still wanted whoever did it to own up to it (in the end I don't think anyone ever did. All I knew was I wasn't anywhere near it).
So on Minecraft, capitalism does work; however it is bad for everyone if people become greedy, which I think is bad for capitalism on Minecraft and in real life. Unfortunately, there is no way to make people generous (with the exception in Minecraft that you can kick them if they're "not generous enough").
I guess if I were entering this world my first question would be what's the end goal for this economic system? Is it who has the largest piece of land? The progression and development of the city state or just who has the biggest bank? If it's about who has the most stuff then new players are doomed to failure. If it's for the largest plot then I see it more as a monarchy. I would hire new players to work as my serfs. Thereby reducing the amount of time it would take me to increase the size of my land holdings. This would also give them an "in" into the economic system.
You didn't mention anything about the progression of the city itself but if everyone is hoarding then I can't imagine that the city state is being improved.
You have picked a slow time on the forum to discuss, as many are building a new world to show case, but I see your issue. One thing I would declare if I was governour is a trade day, say 2 days a week at a certain hour to trade. The frustration of lack of land is surely getting to your group. Unlike in America, or any other western country, minecraft runs out of resources quickly. This is because items needed are extremely rade, with everyone wanting diamonds and 12 players to split the resources things are scarce, about only 50 diamonds per person if the whole world is mined. Meanwhile America is grounds for good, uninterfeered capitalism because its great resources. We get things from distant farmlands, far from our metropolitan cities. In minecraft our worlds arent large enough so we dont have an abundance to trade. So size is the key problem. However some people in this world insist to be lazy, especially children. So they wont work for things. Anyways it is true in any system usually immigrants end up with the dirty work, and the land owners have the most money, I can see thos is my city along the cpast, the richest family here owns all of the beachfront and other property. They gain from selling it and in minecraft property owners gain from the resources on it. I can inform you tho ough communism may be the solution for once, not in currency, but in land. Or you can let resources run out, and be forced to restock the world with items. I like this option because it gives endless resources,But there are cons such as distribution of it, and robbers of wherever you store these

how does 16,000 diamonds (estimated if one does the math) broken between 12 people only equal 50 per person?! that leaves a whopping 15,400 diamonds unaccounted for... granted it would probably take 5+ months for those 12 people to mine out every block between y16 and bedrock to find all of them, but still... 50 per person... really? i've been on a friends world where him, myself and 6 other people had already mined about 100 diamonds each, at a minimum, AFTER we all created 2 full sets of diamond armor... 2 full sets of armor per person is 384 diamonds, then 800 per person (atleast) takes our minimum amout up to 1,184, a full 584 diamonds over your estimate...
