Im not talking about a hole mate, Im talking about a well (with walls all the way down which you would have to manually build if you hit a cave - do you do that too?
Do you travel down a ladder - or drop into water?
Anyone with more constructive feedback than "ye bro this iz SOOOOOOO easy, I do it in like 4 senconds" appreciated.

lol but what you are describing seems to be rather easy.. dig a 3X3 hole all the way down drop a 2 high water source on bedrock... then cobble all the sides up. Jumping into the safety of the 2 high water puddle every time you go down for the next wall. Then at the end.. drop one bucket on each corner and done... even with the occasional cave it seems easy.. Throw a ravine in the mix and a 1/4 of the mining is already done.

are you talking about nothing but source blocks of water, or would just filling the top 4 blocks satisfy you? because i've built a 10 deep well and filled it with source blocks (though mine was a bit larger than 2x2, it was a 8x8 circular (as much as you can in MC) well) and to get it filled with source block took about 2 hours to do in survival... after almost drowning 4 times, WITH a resperation & aqua afinity 3 helm...
I am with the majority here. I don't think this would be challenging at all even if you hit cave systems. You will get your cobble making the hole, if you fall into a cave system just use the cobble to continue walling up the well. Then go back up to the top and drop your buckets on the edge of the well and there you go.
When you say "infinite well", I think water available at the surface that extends down to bedrock with source blocks all the way down like DM described. If that's the case, unless you use torches, you would drown before you got to the bottom and for sure not make it back to the surface.
Perhaps a better challenge that could be used as transport would be a water elevator. Although that would need a three by two hole and lots of ladders or signs. I have one on two different worlds and they work. Not the fastest transport, but less costly than minecarts.
It would even with a 3x3 with one center....reduce the amount of water, buckets and sign you need...all you need to do is digg down ounce digg up song 3x3 like a staircase, drop water from top and and before you go down take blocks, go down taking the stair case apart. Then to Getty back up instead of taking water builds up using your blocks when your ready for another wall jump in the water and float down....don't forgery to pie your head out of the stream for air.....everyone digs different ly....but it is pretty easy dude...

Will it be difficult for him? If he hits a cave system he will have to drop in and build the well structure right through it!
Could this be used as a way to travel quickly down to level 10 for branch mining? Could it have other uses?
I think it will be pretty cool. Interesting to hear your guys feedback or if anyone has did it previously
That probably wont be the case though...
