Protection is the only one that's really worthwhile for general use. Boots can also get feather falling, and helmets can also come with Aqua Affinity and Respiration. You can get all of these effects on a piece of armor at once, but the different type of protection (including basic protection) can't stack on an armor piece together.
Protection - Reduces all damage
Fire Protection - Protects against fire damage and extinguishes fires faster
Blast Protection - Protects against explosive damage (good for Creepers)
Projectile Protection - Protects against projectile damage (i.e. Arrows and Ghast/Blaze Fireballs)
Those are the four best to get. They can be obtained on each piece of armor and there is always a chance that you can get multiple of them on a single piece of armor.
Something good for fighting... Well all I can say as everyone else is protection armor. Protection IV would be best. And feather falling on boots would be good because let's say your on a mountain and a skeleton shoots you off and there's land under you feather falling basically does the work for you. Chestplates nothing extra you can get on them but a chestplate is the most important armor. Leggings nothing special just regular armor. Boots I already explained. Having a full set of armor would be best. ( Iron and Diamond are best )
