I don't think you can carry frames with items in them. I believe when you break them off your wall it'll drop the frame and the item as 2 separate items.

From my understanding, blocks will be embossed in item frames, and clocks are confirmed to work according to the live stream. I think it's safe to assume compasses and maps will work as well. I sure hope maps combine when placed in item frames next to each other.
Can you put more than 1 item in a frame where it would break the frame out into a grid? I can't wait to use them over my chests to identify what its contents are. If I have more than one type of item in that chest I would love to be able to display multiple ones in one frame. If not though I can always put two item frames over my double chests.

Is it just going to be, essentially, an inventory slot that's frozen in an area as opposed to your person?

You can only put 1 selected item in a frame.
Item → frame.
Item = working*
*Maps may not.
Frame =/= item holder in inventory.
