Haha, I remember this. Funny thing Is, I Still hate ravines with a passion. I'll never get over the fact of mobs being able to drop down on you if you're below them. On top of that, with the new Ai system I can only see them getting worse
I really like underground structures, mainly just because they have loot and also sometimes expose other structures. But of them, ravines are my least favorite. No chests, hard to get down, and full of lava.

Actually, with the new Ai I've found that happening much less.. Of course skeletons will still snipe at you, but other mobs don't seem walk off any drop that would cause them damage. I'm not sure of the actual block height, but it's rare that they chase you blindly like they did before.
I like ravines from a purely aesthetic viewpoint. I always intend to do some sort of dramatic build in a ravine, like a village perched on narrow ledges. Maybe something like Petra in Egypt (?). Lots of little bridges across and waterfalls, carved out dwellings and suchlike. Never got around to it yet though!
