They're survivable, but it's hard to maneuver around the nether and make stairwells, and building is impractical in here too. It's a shame to come across an open "plain", and two minutes later, it's a flaming crater-pocked mess.
I agree with you, Ghast spawns are ridiculously high.
You have to be ready to explore the nether. Not to be taken litely. But it's a good challenge so I'm glad. I'll get killed a few times trying to build cobblestone walkways to nether fortresss but that's part of the game.
Its not hard to survive in the nether....killing them maybe (takes a bit to aim with bow) all you need is a fire resistance poition and Bam! Ghast arent a problem unless yournot paying attention where your walking and fall to your death....other then that the nether is "home sweet home"

If they turn it down, then those that need ghast tears for potions will most likely complain. The best thing to do is build and expand in groups. Have some distract and fight ghasts while others build stone/cobblestone covered walkways.
I guess I get lucky. Ghasts never kill me, even while I'm very stationary. While I was building a shelter around my Nether Portal, I was getting shot left and right by two ghasts. Yeah, I took a few shots, but they did not kill me. If I'm out in the open, buildings roads, that may be a different story, but ghasts have yet to kill me. The landscape gets wiped out, though. Right now, it's the magma cubes that kill me the most. I can never managed to get their hitboxes before they knock me back.
I really don't see it as that much of a problem. If you are decently geared it shouldn't be that hard to survive a few ghast hits. In fact for one of the maps I am working on I really wish I could increase the amount of ghasts in the nether.
The big annoyance with me is that they destroy the netherrack which you may need to get somewhere, and they leave fire everywhere. They can also knock you off of a high place if you aren't paying attention and either suffer massive fall damage or fall in lava. Fighting two at once is okay, fighting four at once with new ones appearing all the time is insane.

I am pretty sure this is exactly how hard they intended it to be. You can always gear up or reduce the difficulty level if it's too much for you. Armor, enchantments, and potions are in the game for exactly this type of situation.
Half a dozen? Really? Because I have a superflat nether with a full city built edge to edge. I want as many ghast to spawn as possible when we are pvp'ing there but I have yet to see more than 4 at once on the map (you can just see all four edges from the center) and usually can't find more than three at once. I'm not saying you are wrong, because it is possible that some of them have spawned inside the larger buildings and I just cant see them, but in 3 months on the map even when it was empty I never saw as many ghasts as I see people quote on this forum.
And if you kill one the ghast spawn instantly
It's to hard to survive because 3 ghast attack me at the same time =/

Retired StaffI agree with you, Ghast spawns are ridiculously high.
Keep yourself up to date with the Minecraft Forum rules!
You step into the open and all the ground around you if full of holes and fire.
Stay fluffy~
