Save just before you enchant. If you don't get the enchantment you want, just reload, at least this is what I do ^.^

yes its random but the symbols have patterns about 2-6 characters long. you can't really explain what's what but through trial and error I know what will give me fire on bow for example. just go into creative and enchant the $**t out of stuff for a couple hours writing down the patterns and what you got with what combo of patterns. I get what I want on average about 7/10 tries its not perfect but it works.
save and reload? really? I'm sure you only play on peaceful too......
so if you have a friend join you while your enchanting have him throw a ender pearl in the air just as soon as you place the item in the table then have your friend leave before it hits the ground and you will get awesome tools/armor
