The new map that I'm playing has everything (obviously)! I'm really excited! There are ghasts, zombie pigmen, cube magma thingys, and a nether fortress near the portal... I'm super excited but I don't know where to start. It's all kind of overwhelming...
What am I supposed to tackle first? For example, in the over-world, everyone knows you find wood, make tools, make shelter, etc... I'm pretty noobish when it comes to the nether. Do I make a base or something to protect my nether portal? In my old worlds, there were no threats but this new world has ghasts, and I'm pretty sure they can destroy the portal with their fireballs... Is there some sort of general procedure you follow for the nether? Thanks.
First off you'd probably like to put a cobblestone fortress around your nether portal. That way you can keep it from getting deactivated by the ghasts.
I usually make a cobblestone house around the portal. Then focus on finding warts and soul sand to make a farm for potion making. I then make some fire resist potions and go on a killing spree for materials.

Well First off, Congratulation. Second Off I'm gonna have you re-read that and tell me these aren't suppose to be In your map.
Now Don't take my post the wrong way missy. You could just be that Overwhelmed...
Edit - Ahh I did not see this part...I Was to overwhelmed by your post.
Bring a bow and arrows with you. (Take out Ghast)
Bring an iron or diamond sword. (Take out blaze)
Bring armor (Protection)
Bring cobblestone or stone bricks
Go to the nether
Don't attack pigmen unless you're me with armor and a sword going beast mode. "Just kidding"
Make a base with cobblestone or stone bricks around you nether portal
Happy hunting for glowstone, netherwart, blaze rods, etc.
Don't destroy the blaze spawner. Its the only way to get blaze rods for potion. Make it to an xp farm. Use etho's design or if you're poor then use the "Ghetto Blaze Farm"
Nether fortresses are rare? Oh wow, that's really cool, especially because it's near my portal. Okay guys, I will build a cobblestone base around my portal and stash some stuff there. I read up on the Nether wiki a little, so I can build myself a farm and have a food source there in case the nether fortress is really difficult to take over.
Tackle the fortress first. They are pretty rare in the Nether, so seeing one is pretty cool.
Funny how you put those 2 words In the same post.
Nether fortress are no longer rare. It Is now 100% sure to be spawned In the nether. If Not which Is highly rare, There will be a nether reset button In TU9

Firstly, nether fortresses are not rare on the Xbox - There is supposed to be one in every nether (as 4J have programmed it). Some fortresses are completely buried in netherrack, so if you have a nether where you are having trouble finding the fortress, it is far more likely that it is buried in netherrack than just missing from the world.
As others have said, the first thing you want to do is to build a protective shelter around your nether portal. Cobblestone is the easiest material to do this as it is readily available in the overworld and is resistant to ghast blasts. You can also build it out of other blast resistant blocks (e.g. obsidian) if you wish. My initial one is usually very small, just encircling the portal itself. Sometimes I bring an door with me, but I usually just position the door opening in a hallway like structure so that a ghast can't get an angle on the portal itself.
I like to get into my nether as quickly as possible, so I often don't have a bow and arrows yet. At minimum, I carry a sword and pickaxe (of the best quality I have or several if stone) and lots of food in order to keep my health regenerating. I also carry at least a stack of gravel or sand, another stack of cobblestone, 14 obsidian, and a flint and steel.
After I have my first portal protected, I generally go off looking for the nether fortress. I you keep moving, most of the ghast fireballs will miss their mark, so it's often not as big an issue while exploring the nether than one might think. If I determine what direction the fortress lies, I'll cut tunnels out of the netherrack and/or use some of the cobblestone to start to make some "duck and cover" blinds along the route between the fortress and my first portal. Once I get inside the fortress, I'll pick a good spot either inside it or very near it and build a second portal and protect that, if necessary, with cobblestone. If the portal is inside the fortress, a cobblestone blind is usually unnecessary since the netherbrick is also resistant to ghast fireballs. Then, I'll light that portal and enter it from the nether side and see where I emerge in the overworld. Depending on where I come out, I may then move my home base in the overworld to that second portal location.
Then, I'll work at getting potion supplies in both the nether and the overworld. If I'm still using the first portal, I'll expand that shelter into a larger base with a netherwart farm and sniper blinds where I can take down ghasts with a bow and arrow without getting hit by fireballs. I may also build a blaze spawner trap to make getting blaze powder and glowstone dust safer and easier.
