ill try that, i was scared that I would have to start a new world with so much time sunk into this one.. thanks. when does update 9 happen would you know?
If you slaughter some of your old animals new ones will spawn(possibly chickens!) because when people started to complain about animal numbers they set them to start spawning heaps again just as we got breeding.
It's different on the PC I'm quite sure they spawn at the world generation or atleast at a very slow rate after that.

I put my shirt on one leg at a time, just like everybody else.
Chickens can also easily become trapped in the deep vertical shafts in a world. Unlike the other animals that die after taking a long fall, chickens can half float/fly down these shafts. Once they hit bottom, they don't despawn because the bottom of these shafts are often smaller than 19 x 19. Since they don't die and don't despawn, they tend to fill up the animal cap preventing new ones from spawning on the surface.
As others have suggested, try killing off several of the other animals you see and watch for chickens that might spawn in their place. I would also suggest you carry wheat seeds in your hand when out looking for them... sometimes you may not see them but they might see the wheat seeds and start following you. Also, be sure to check for small bodies of water, particularly on the plains. Animals often congregate in these. As a last resort (since this can take a lot of time to do), try going down into several of those deep shafts and ravines and you may locate chickens at the bottom of them.
Lol - same seeds whether you get them from harvesting wheat or mowing tall grass. I tend to think of them as wheat seeds because they'll always grow wheat when planted. To regrow grass, one has to throw bonemeal on the lawn.
What does the inventory label them? (can't remember and am not in front of Xbox to check).
found a naturally occuring zombie pigman in over world.... still no chickens.. searching ravines and i have planted atleast 1000 grass blots from shearing grass

Don't use tall grass. It will take a while for them to spawn. Check your forest or plain biome or tundra "snow". Should be at least one.
