I thought I'd kill time between now and the TU9 by doing a quick project: build a mansion (not a castle) on top of a mountain.
Structures atop mountains are cool because they give you a great vantage point, as well as looking impressive on the horizon.
What is a pain in the backside is GETTING up to them, however. I usually just wrap a stone staircase around the mountain, but am thinking about putting in a concealed ladder in basically a chimney inside the mountain.
How do you prefer to get up to your mountaintop lair expeditiously? I wish you could stack pistons in such a way to build an express elevator. A minecart express would be cool too, but that's a LOT of gold.
I was almost thinking you meant the minecart elevator...lol which is actually the quickest far as I know way to get up... lots of iron for the carts, but no gold needed for them. Can't remember the tutorial for it, even if a simple design. Unsure if still works.. hmm... should as it uses the stuck cart thing to move up and down, with an extra cart off to the side to get out at both ends...
Well it is a thought...
I usually think before I climb. Sometimes I just break the dirt blocks till I reach the top and work my way down building, while other times I do some things you do; ie the staircase... Even once just placed dirt just to get up higher, well could be any common material (gravel/sand). But once up top I would just build at least a temp house or building so I can sleep the night off up there to get the work I need to do during the day done with ease. hmmm....:D

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
That piston elevator is pretty damn cool. I'll try it out on my super flat experiment world. Though I feel a big spiral staircase has that ancient cavernous feel.

I like using powered rail for high mountain retreats.

That's cool, I'm gonna try it. I heard some elevator designs don't work on Xbox though... still worth a shot
