So I searched around and didn't find any discussions on the topic in the XBOX threads.
How do you live/play your survival game?
Do you: set up roots and stay
explore first the settle
set up roots then move
I am fairly new to MC. I have about 25-30 hours total. I have been in the same survival seed and have established a well laid out mining camp, farm, rail, house. However aside from a boat trip a friend and I did when I first started, I haven't explored very much. I am thinking about building a rail as I explore.
I like to use random seeds and I'll usually explore the map to find a spot I like near the center. Then I build up and am usually not too far from any good places I find like mooshroom biomes, strongholds, or mineshafts.
It depends on what sort of survival game I have in mind when I start the world. Something like the 404 challenge or a survival island challenge pretty much demands that that you start out in a limited area of the map and gradually work your way outward. Other times, I'll try my hand at a more nomadic lifestyle and surviving out in the open, which is the sort of challenge that pretty much demands that the player keep moving and exploring a lot.
I check the map in Creative first to see if everything's there, and leave whatever wasn't explored alone.
I re-create the world in Survival and usuallyplant down where I spawned.
In my SSP world, however, I have been through literally almost every cave in the entire map and have a house in 2 corners of it....
It depends on the map but if I have a nice terrain I will try to expand my area as much as I can by including things like rails, streets and lighting systems. It's mainly an accessibility thing for me because it's easier to travel around the area by minecart and if I want to walk around I won't get lost as easily, because I don't always carry a map on me.
That all depends on how quickly I find a spot in the beginning. If right off then that is the place I settle. That is not all though. If the resources I am looking for are not close by then I might just end up exploring the entire map just looking for said resources. Good example is if the map consisted of primarily all terrain except spruce, it being the least amount on the map. sometimes if I take a while to find certain locations to get those depending on the seed. This is just dependent on which direction i take first.
Like in my example I could go one way and not find that sparse amount of spruce, yet if I initially went in the correct direction I could find right off the back. The only way I would know for sure which direction to go off the back is either dumb luck/intuition or I have been in creative previously on a map made to explore prior to actually settling on the map. Like my current map I am working with, I never knew the stronghold was in my backyard, but when I went into creative on a separate map just to see mainly what the nether fortress had I just got curious to see if had a stronghold with portal. Note the nether had no fortress, period. So I found out that the stronghold is essentially in my back yard from that search.
I haven't actually gone to it yet, but now I know the general direction in which it lies. i like to take my time in expanding. So it would take me forever to even attempt to cover the entire map with what I build. This is all just an example, but rings true in how I go about things. I don't always go into creative before hand to check out the map, which was the case with the above example, as I found everything needed in the beginning to start a base then found the location I wanted it... Ironically it just happened to be at initial spawn...>< go figure...lol

My First World, always getting back to is a pleasure I enjoy with each new update that brings in more things to add in.
I used to explore allot but that was when I used caves to mine iron and coal because I thought it was faster .now I pretty much set up shop ,mine at level 11 then explore for cool places to build, I do set up shop in a cool area to begin with though, and lately I have been using the villages in game to set up shop and just mod them as I go

I was just curious to see how everyone plays.
